When I was a child we only had 2 channels in the UK and they broadcast very little in the daytime. The BBC had no adverts whatsoever (and still doesn't to this day) and on the commercial channel programs would only show advertising after about 15 minutes of program viewing.
I was about 10 years old the first time I visited America. Many things were very different and much better than the country I lived in. TV wasn't one of them. What a huge number of television channels, but hardly a one had anything worth watching on the hot summer days when my aunt said to stay inside. I remember seeing lots of commercials for used cars and constant cartoons of a moose (called bullwinkle ?). My cousin let me watch a Mexican channel with almost non stop bull fighting - aunty went ballistic when she discovered what had been keeping me quiet !
