I work in remote areas all the time. And we have no internet piped in at our country home either.
I had been using a verizon mifi hot spot for years.
I changed jobs last year and one of the perks is wireless internet provided.
They sent me a CRADLEPOINT MBR1400 router with an attached Verizon modem.
Man this was a world of difference.
They've since replaced it with a newer version of the Cradle point that now does the newer 5ghz band. We have actually been able to watch YouTube and Amazon videos without buffering now.
The business plan is unlimited but I was told it's relatively cheap vs the consumer plans.

I've read good things about Cradlepoint hardware. The missing piece I haven't found is actually getting the plan. The hardware isn't cheap, around $800, but could be worth it with a decent plan from Verizon.

Anybody with key to that aspect, I'm listening

I tried Verizon hot spot gadget when they rolled out G4 LTE few years back. It was loaned to me to try it two days before purchasing the plan. They told me it comes with 5 GB I could use. The speed was great. The problem was that I used 5 GB in less than one afternoon while wisiting the same sites on our sattelite would take less than half GB. It occured to me that it would be very expensive plan at $5 for additional GB. I forgot the amount they charged me when returning the gadged. I think it was something like $50-60. Pissed me off. Then I went to internet and googled overcharging by verizon. There were thousands of complaints about the charges. Many people were charged thousands of dollars/month for data.

Good morning all. Spring is at it's best today, with plenty of sunshine and a predicted high of 59F.

LFN. Not heard "sheep boots" before. I spend so much time wearing wellington boots, it sometimes feels strange to put on ordinary shoes. This year we have a lamb that looks like it's wearing a black sock.

Son, fiancée, and Charlotte the boxer arrived last night. I roasted lots of coffee for them yesterday, so I'll play barista this morning. Coco has been guarding the Frisbee.

Still running on 1.5 Mb DSL here, but fiber has been run nearby, and I got a letter about increasing my speed from CenturyLink this week. Another of my sons and wife have Dish Network satellite internet and are quite happy.

Good morning 57˚ cool and sunny. The storm passed with just a smidgin of rain so its only redeeming factor is that it dropped the temperatures about 10 degrees for a day.
The Z mower is like new with the yearly maintenance complete. I thought I was not going to get finished when my Dad called and needed a ride to town to the store. Mom's hip is still hurting. If her Cardiologist clears her she can replace the hip.

Speaking of Cardiologist, the local Cardiologist gave a lecture at LaGrange Hospital Thursday Morning. The topic was healing heart disease. He said Cardiologist are only trained to treat the symptoms and that only a whole food - plant based - no oil diet can stop the disease. :thumbsup: I was looking for another Cardiologist since my last one went to Austin, I think I found him. He is not like the Dr. who says to stop smoking and smells like cigarette smoke, he actually practices the cure.

He also said something I found interesting - What the mother eats during pregnancy will determine the child's heat disease. Of the three sons my mother had the first has none, the second has some, and the third had a lot. Did she eat progressively worse in the 1950s? I don't have any references so I may have to ask for his. I really don't want to talk to her about it now she has enough going on without feeling guilty for anything. Besides I know the child can correct and stop the disease.

55 this AM. The house was overrun by women last night. All I remember is sitting back, drinking beer and eating way to much food while laughing a lot.

This AM the really unhealthy breakfast is on order. With a visit to local restaurants for lunch and a grilled loin by this evening. My moderate health diet just went out the window this weekend.

Finally feels like spring, 57 this morning 70's later, filtered sunshine.
I feel the best I have in 5-6 weeks, finally getting the flu behind me, what an ordeal that is!
I was going over my tests online yesterday and the X-rays for pneumonia, which were clear, on 2/11 said (Cardiac silhouette normal, different radiologist on 2/13 said cardiac profile slightly enlarged, which it has been for 25 years. But also said tortuous aorta, I had to look that up and now I guess I'll worry about that until my next cardiologist visit! Nobody said anything to me the whole time I was in the hospital for the flu, who knows?

As with horsepower, more is always better. It's taking about 8 minutes to convert a typical DVD movie to MP4. That's about half what it took with the 2011 MacBook Pro (which also had an Intel i7) the new one replaced. Almost all other tasks face bottlenecks in no way related to the CPU. Anything internet related suffers from the satellite connection. It all depends on what you're trying to do and what software you're running to do it. Apple's next generation laptops are rumored to have double the RAM, but the way this one gets used seldom take up all of the 16Gb that's in it. I think the PC magazines focus on performance and lots of times fail to put it in terms of actual use in real life applications. If you do a lot of disc intensive work, an SSD will make a huge difference. If you move a lot of data in and out of peripheral devices, USB3 will speed things up. If you have a network server, gigabit Ethernet and 802.11 AC will help. If you're a gamer, look into a fast graphics processor. But don't spend money on fancy bleeding edge tech you won't really use. In my experience the new stuff is always full of bugs and doesn't buy you anything when it's time to resell it on the used market.:2cents:

The local BMW motorcycle dealer, Ozzie's, is celebrating their 40th anniversary today so I think I'll take a little ride down there around noon. Who said there's no such thing as a free lunch?:laughing:

Picked up the refrigerator for the van at UPS yesterday then went over the mechanic's to get a little more done on the van. His partner had brought up a helper to sort out some of his project vans, and that pretty much monopolized my mechanic's time. Seemed to be a lot of instructing going on, surprising since both the partner and his helper are supposed to be mechanics. One of the issues was electrical, and neither one knew how to use an Ohm meter or knew how voltage, current, and resistance are related.:confused2: I did get the problem with the front brake hoses sorted out and have some brackets to make as a result. We also need to make up a short section of steel line, and the mechanic says he'll buy the proper flaring tool to finish up the end. Here we go again...

I also got a good start on installing the relays for the new headlights, making several soldered in line splices and tidying up terminals with shrink tube. Slow, tedious work all done with just the light from a headlamp; that shop is so poorly lit. Didn't finish, but I got enough done to know it's gonna work, always a nice feeling.

Also managed to scrounge some genuine VW wiring harness tie downs from scrap harnesses in the mechanic's store room. There's a lot of junk in there, but it's really nice to be able to find parts that VW no longer carries.

Got tank vacuumed out yesterday, didn't get it filled to leak test it ... hopefully today. Did manage to get some other stuff done tho' ... until the hips started hurting so bad that I didn't want to be moving around anymore. I had taken two of them industrial-strength Tylenol as a pre-emptive measure, but once I started carting 5G buckets of gravel downstairs, even those couldn't stop the pain ... time for more cortisone shots ... :laughing:

Back before wife's accident she worked for Airtouch (Verizon). An employee perk was a cell phone. Of course those were the days you hardly called anyone with it. Nice Motorola flip, not so little. After the accident and her status changed to long term disability the phone just died. They just shut it off without even asking if we'd like a pay plan. Of course phone was useless not being compatible with anyone else. Probably should have gone in and after about a plan, but figured hey, must not want us so moved to Sprint not knowing how poor the coverage would be in Hawaii until I got 1st roaming bill - that months was more than the rest of the year switched to Bellsouth (AT&T)

I've used cradlepoint router with gsm modem before, worked well.
