glad you made it there safely Farmer but what a long miserable drive. You need a nap. nice day out, did some light food shopping, will now wash the front porch. That's about as energetic as I want to be today.

Thanks Drew. We got here about midnight. I've already had my nap. Getting ready to go to the beach.

Good Morning. 1045, thunderstorm, 80F with 88% humidity. Forecast high of 84F with 60% chance of thunderstorms today, and a low of 72F tonight. The forecast said it would be much cooler today than yesterday, but until the rain came a few minutes ago, I was burning up in the garden. I started out with the hoe and push plow, but decided to disc up the 1st plantings of green beans, sweet corn, 2 kinds of melons and the cucumbers. I got it all done but the green beans before the rain came.

I have the British Grand Prix {from Silverstone} to watch, then Nascar tonight from Daytona. Not a big fan of the plate races, but there is always the BIG ONE to look forward to.

You guys have a good one,

Larro

The sky has just turned dark and the first drops of rain are rolling down the windows. Getting hay in is proving more difficult this year, with no prolonged dry spells. I have been helping a friend get his bales under cover. The best we could do was to stack them in the field for now and cover each stack with a truck tarpaulin. Looks like we made it just in time.

There are several small private railways in North Wales thanks to the once numerous slate quarries. When we were on holiday there last year, we took our grandson on the other railway in Porthmadog. The track up to Blaenau Ffestiniog is a much longer journey, so perhaps we will try that one day when he is older. I think Ffestiniog is the oldest private rail track, where they originally hauled the empty wagons up the long steady incline with horses, loaded up with slate at the top, then got the horses to board and let gravity return them back to the port.

Some of the old mining towns and slate quarries are still quite desolate places. The hillsides are covered in broken discarded slate, with neither grass nor trees being inclined to grow there.

Thanks, I took a train ride at windermere back in the early 90's.

77F with sun and some clouds ...

Woman is after me to get the deck on the Kubota so she can mow.

Will do that and then start working on straightening out the deck boot for the Trac Vac which I managed to mash about a week ago.

If you're just using the mower for yourself those sprockets should last you a while.
Kyle,

That's all it gets used for ... just trimming and mowing about an acre around the house ... although we do use it to get around the property like a UTV or golfcart, and pull a little wagon with it.

They will however not last as long (compared to new sprockets and new chain) as they'll prematurely wear your chain.
Right.

They are way larger than the sprockets that are driving them ... so the chain has a lot of tooth engagement on the driven sprocket. I checked them by laying a length of new chain on them and seeing if there was any back and forth movement and there didn't appear to be any at all.

Turning them around was a good choice.
I suspected it might be - thanks for confirming

You should be fine unless you get into the commercial mowing business.
Not planning on that ... good to know.

Those pumps look heavy duty compared to today's models. Will you give them some TLC?
Yup, absolutely ... spent about an hour or so yesterday cleaning off the accumulated caked on dust and debris with a screwdriver and brushes ... next they will get washed off before I crack anything open, to prevent contamination.

I have the service manuals for them, but my work will be limited to doing a very thorough drain and refill of the hydraulic fluid. As well as doing something to handle the keyways of course.

Might also coat the ferrous parts with phosphoric acid to kill the rust.

Thanks for the input :D

72F @ 6AM. Sun and clouds mixed. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible. High 96F. Winds S at 10 to 15 mph.

Sounds like everyone had a nice 4th, and the trips, even the long ones, were made safely. Yesterday's tritip came out really nice using a meat thermometer this time to get it to medium rare. Never had one quite that tender before, and it's a cut known for toughness. Used a rub I made up from garlic powder, salt, rosemary, smoked paprika, and chipotle powder. I think a bit of sugar would have fit right in, but it was still very nice.

Shopped a couple sales for new appliances this morning; the frig is acting up and the dishwasher does anything but. Flailed around for a couple hours reading about the various features, even in Consumer Reports magazine. But every one that would fit and had a nice feature set got enough bad reviews (mostly for poor reliability) that I just gave up. Guess I'll wait 'till one or the other goes belly up, as the devil you know is better than the one you don't.

Still had time to shoot some paint before it got too warm, and enough paint to cover not just the primered tank, but some really scuffed up mirror covers and side covers as well. In fact I still have one more coat to go on the side covers. The white I had on hand isn't a perfect match with that on the bike, but it's close enough and will look 1000% better than the way it was. And even better, I get to throw out a couple of cans and make more room on the shelves. ;)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, folks!

Good morning, 64F heading to a beautiful 84F. Hope everyone had a good long weekend.

lot of long drives going on, get there safely, and go put your feet in the sand. There's something about listening to the constant repetitive crash of the ocean that makes a soothing rhythm in our busy lives.

started having pains in my lower right abdomen yesterday, Hasn't gone away today. Sure hope I'm not getting appendicitis.
Suppose I ought to go get it checked out today. Sea trial and survey on my boat tomorrow and I don't have time for this...
Hopefully nothing but an odd place for something to be sore when pressing.

First cup of has been drank. 54° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 84° with mostly sunny skies. Fell asleep watching NASCAR. Nothing happening for 5 hours. Woke up at 1:00am. Race was at 60 laps. Watched rest of race that ended at 2:30am. Crazy ending. 2 nights in a row with less than 5 hours sleep. Looks like I will need a nap in the afternoon.
Drew, hope you feel better soon.
RNG, never heard of a Tritip before until a friend from CAL. brought one to a BBQ. It was good. But cannot find them in stores here in MI.
Good Morning All.

61F now mid to upper 80's for high.
Didn't amount to whole lot yesterday and today back to 8 hour job.
Looks like a low profile week mostly because of the 3 H's.

Enjoy the day all.

Finger cross your pain will pass quickly Drew.

54F. 85F today & partly cloudy. I need to get started earlier today to beat the afternoon heat.

Traveling with youngsters, I've forgotten all that. In 1977 we took a trip from NW Ohio to the Texas Gulf Coast in our no AC, 2-door 1974 Nova. Our oldest boy was 3 years old. I built a plywood platform to make the back seat area flat. I guess that would not be allowed these days. Hope everyone has a good time on their travels.

Drew, go to the doctor.

Drew, go to the doctor.
I will, though upon reflection, I picked up some seriously heavy packing boxes in the barn yesterday trying to get stuff put away, and wonder if I pulled a muscle.
this just wastes an entire day...
more later, let's not waste bandwidth on this.

69/84 more rain showers last night and more today likely.

Grilled steaks and shrimp outside for my son's birthday yesterday. He got a bottle of rye blended with bourbon as a gift...seems that's the newest thing in the likker biz. Roasted some nice Sumatra beans with another son just back from Maine and Vermont. Good day.

73 and wet out this AM. Really cannot keep up with the rains. Grass needs mowing again. Where is the dry weather and dormant grasses? LOL.
Have a safe day all.

   / Good morning!!!! #35,660
Rain came a little earlier than expected, so I will only be choosing jobs from the wet weather list today.

Many of my wife's soft fruit bushes have succumbed to a below ground pest - vine weevil. The nasty weevil grubs have eaten away all the roots of those that were planted in pots.

At least the few apple trees planted earlier in the year are doing well, apart from the one I put too close to the fence - it got a premature pruning by sheep. Not sure how well ants and apples get on long term, so far this year ants have done a good job of patrolling these little trees to make a meal of anything that dares to land on the leaves.

Drew, Txdon has some marvelous healing powers, however they may be limited to hands on with old tractors, not sure how effective through the TBN ether for older tractor drivers. :)
