Good morning, 12F heading to 18F. Got about 2" of snow lasr night, when I went to bed it looked like it was going to be worse but since the wind died down it wasn't as bad as I first suspected. Sure enjoy the ride to work since we moved, 2 1/2 miles in snow is way better then 25.

Poured first cup of coffee. 51° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 74° with sun all day. Another patio day.
Pizza sounds good. Need to figure out how to do it on the BBQ.
Good Morning All.

Man sun and 70's sure sounds nice.

It is about 23 out there with highs of 35 expected.

I am going through the wood like crazy right now.

If the sun pokes through today, I might grill outside. The coals though seem to not get as "hot" in this type of weather. Is it me? Or is this some phenom I don't know about?

Five degrees here, there was a lot of snowing and blowing and drifting last night so I guess I will get some seat time today...poor me.... my GMC has leather with the heated seat option...would love to retrofit one of those to fit my Deere to keep my fat a** warm while outside. riptides, you are correct about coals not heating as much, I have experienced the same thing using my Weber grill in cold weather....the air temperature can be a large factor in how hot the coals get. Have a great day, everyone.

Coals have a much lower internal temperature in cold weather and part of the combustion heat is used to overcome that and the air temperature cools the food and also reduces the combustion heat. Even a gas grill suffers from the same effect although not to the same extent.

15 and dropping, lots of drifting snow out there. You guys burning wood you just split?

... You guys burning wood you just split?

Not yet, I am fortunate enough to have a large building which I can rotate about 5 cords through. I have some logs that I collected over the summer that are not yet split, they will be for next year. I know some don't agree with keeping wood this way, some elect to cut, split and season. I cut and wait till I get around to it. :)

Good Morning! 37˚ cloudy cold. it never got out of the thirties yesterday and will not today or tomorrow either.
The WBS's damper is set on the least amount of air intake without dying it's eating 2 logs every 4 hours. So far we still have not needed the heat pump this year - inside temp 73˚.

murphy 1244, I'm finding dead mesquite and oak trees that have not began to rot, then cut and split (with my $209 Harbor Freight 5 ton electric splitter) and burn within a few days.

do you get alot of smoke from them? I burn oak up here and we need to split then stack then season for 2 years is best.

this would be a good thread all by itself, how long to age wood before burning...depends upon the type and where it was of course.

Clear forecast for today, then I woke up to winter advisory for freezing rain. And boy it's slick out there, but soon the temps will get above freezing. I am awaiting some carpet treads for my entry stairs, half of which are currently slick with ice. Can't wait until they come in. Not like I'm going to throw salt on wood.

26 degrees climbing to high forties today and I wish it would hurry up.

23 this morning windchill of 10. We are at our high for today. Half my birds are coming this morning. They bring them in on a semi that is climate controlled. Sure beats the old school bus they use to use.

There is some smoke when I initially put them in but after about ten minutes I never see any smoke. The wood was about a year old standing outside in the 100 degree summer days.

After the second year the outside wood gets soft and light and creates more ash than heat.

I am dumping the WBS ash tray out about twice a day or every three fill-ups and burn downs.

If I go to bed late enough and load with heavy wood the coals will still be hot enough to just add wood and air to get the fire going again in the morning.

I usually wake up once about 3:00 - 4:00 and throw a couple logs on and go back to sleep.

This is the first year I have had enough big mesquite to use it exclusively for several days. It gets the hottest, leaves little ash and hardly no flame. I'm out of mesquite now and have switched to the less hot post oak and blackjack oak.

I burn rounds. I have some Gum I cut down this spring I've burned, I have some stuff left over from logging 4 years ago been stacked as logs on my bucking pile. I've burned most of the rotting wood I cut 4 years ago and stacked outside in the weather. I only split the stuff I use to light the fire.

I'm certain I do almost everything wrong tough, so nobody follow my example please.

24 this morning & high clouds.

Be well,
David

David, I do also. If it will fit through the side WBS door (9") it does not get split. I don't open the front doors while there is a fire - only to clean and initial load and light.

Good Morning. 0820, partly cloudy, 30F with 95% humidity. The low this morning was 22F. Forecast high of 49F with 0% chance of rain this afternoon, and a low of 30F tonight. We were without the wind so there was a nice white frost this morning. Shouldn't be too bad today, not that I have to get outside to test that theory, other than stepping on the back porch to feed the dog.

Oh, now I know how to increase the clicks on What's For Supper???? Just talk about homemade pizza:D

Everyone stay safe and warm,

Larro

I've never burned mesquite before but I hear people cook on it. Wood here has to sit at least 2 years to season 3 would be better.

Hey Larro...I tried to get a discussion in that thread about home made pizza going a while back but nobody took the hint..... Heading out for SEAT TIME now...first of this winter.

The best BBQ places, like award winning Snow's BBQ, out here have stacks of post oak behind their pits. The smoke smells the best from post oak.
