Tried shooting crows back when I was 17 after a day of bird hunting no luck for me. Looked like he the crow would dodge the bullet.
Bought a new varmint rifle the other week Browning 204 now have to pick out approximate scope. Should be a nice addition to my 220Swift and 22-250. Hopefully light enough wife can shoot as well

Got coffee pot brewing. 51ー with partly cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 66ー (Las Cruses, NM) with partly cloudy skies and chance of a rain shower early evening. Yesterday traveling was good. Today we have to travel threw El Paso, TX. Can be exciting to say the least. Crazy drivers.
Good Morning All.

Love the half temperatures accurate and quite creative

rswyan hope your furnace gets fixed soon. It would seem true repair men in all fields are becoming fewer and fewer at least the ones who truly know how to fix something. In someways computers and plugging into ECM to figure out what's wrong are making us stupid

When you run out of things to build you can come down here and build something for my tractor

Can't wait to head south.

Wish we had that for summers. 90's are the norm. But we will see a few days each year over 100. Even more with heat index above 105.

Thanks for the info on the passive heating systems. I know I said gas backup but a geo unit is also on the table. That would make the excavator to dig the basement with even more cost effective. :). In our area a lot of insurance companies don't like indoor wood burners. Some won't even insure you because of them. But as long as they are 10 feet from the house they don't care. I know there are some cleaner burning outdoor boilers out there. Catalytic and all. Now put one in an out building and they don't care either.
Like I said the porch and basement are must haves. According to wife. May only be a half basement but.

I like basements but they aren't very compatible with passive solar. If you have a good location where water isn't an issue basements are so handy for access to plumbing and heating components, plus the usable space.

There is a two story passive building nearby where the basement is a walk-out. Lots of glass on both levels. The walls were built with ICF's. The basement level is earth bermed on three sides. I have no idea how it is working out though. I don't think it is a residence, looks more like a big toy/hobby barn with motorcycles and such inside.

My cousin built a nice home in Grand Haven, MI that has a light-commercial grade air exchange system. I think the only regular exhaust fans in that house are the dryer vent and range hood. The rest is all handled by constant air circulation with fresh air added. That house has the best indoor air quality I've ever experienced in a residence and you don't notice or hear the air moving.

I think as houses have been built tighter and tighter not enough attention has been paid to offsetting that with air exchange systems. They can add up in price. I've seen just the heat exchanger component itself priced around $5K and up on the 'net. Never got a local quote for one though.

We rely on high cfm bathroom and kitchen fans, open the windows, the stove air inlet does double duty as an air make-up source, etc. But it isn't nearly as good as an air exchange system. They are expensive upfront but getting fresh air and conserving heat does have a payback over time. Just food for thought.

I'm going to try getting the driveway done this afternoon. Sunday is looking cold, high of 21F with NW winds and overnight low of -9F. If we do get rain later today on top this morning's snow that crap will be frozen hard as a rock on Sunday.

Raining now came in early no leaf pick up today, will have to resume tomorrow after church. Xmas decorating today maybe look at job or two. So much to do so little time Storm I spoke of earlier will form Monday or so off Va/Md coast and give interior New England snow. Mild weather prevails until around December 20th or so then if things do not change perhaps White Christmas for my neck of woods and east turning very cold. Right now looks stormy and cold into Janurary as well Farmer2009 looks like week after Christmas will be cold and snow threats will be there. Ground zero may be your neck of woods David(MFLW) 20th thru 22nd looks promising for snow for you and cold too. Remember these are subject to change and just my educated guess

48 this morning and staying there. Turning windy. Too muddy to do much today. Guessing may have to break down and go Christmas shopping with wife. Did get the oil changed in both vehicles yesterday. Found a guy with a lift. Bring him the oil and filter and 5 dollars and he will change your oil. I can't crawl around on ground for that. Another 10 and tired are rotated.

Buppies. Thanks for the forecast. The week after Christmas I may be headed just south of you but we really didn't want to make a 5 hour drive turn to a lot more because of bad roads. But if I can get out of here before it hits and stay in front of it then we would have a few days for the roads to clear.

You didn't already get yours? Mine was out front this morning with a big bow. :)

45 up here in my tree stand, with a few showers passing through. Named this stand the Daisy Stand after my previous dog, who "helped" build it.

I will have to keep that in mind. As my plans are for a 6" spray foamed wall. I want the basement for cold storage of produce. Wife wants it because every time it lightnings she wants underground as it will blow her away. I sleep through most storms.

Thought about doing as you have plan Dave, but after quick walk about outside now steady rain falling Iam going back to plan 1,tomorrow looks like scraper blade will be doing most of the work...guess I better be heading for pickup load of grit sand for the driveway soon.

Stay safe and small steps when outside.

Good Morning. 0830, fog, 63F with 100% humidity. Forecast high of 75F with 20% chance of rain this afternoon, and a low of 48F tonight.

Since today's event at work is in another room, I didn't have to finish the cleanup last night. But I was still 0200 getting out of there. I have another Christmas party tomorrow, so I will cleanup and setup as I go.

As for the varmint eating, crows were terrible pecan thieves, and were exempt from the "you kill it, you eat it" rule. But I was into eating wild game when I was a little boy. And my Great Aunt looked and lived like a Creek Indian. She would cook whatever I took her. Never had ground hog. I don't think they range this far south. As far as rat on a stick, a story I was raised on was about my uncle going squirrel hunting when he was a teenager. He had killed a few, and was carrying them by their tails. Soon all the hair rubbed off their tails. When he got home and was getting ready to clean them, his little brother pointed out they looked just like rats. He never ate squirrel again. It never bothered me, I still love a good mess of tree-rat.

Hope every one has a good day,

Larro

Yeah, me too...I'd rather the frozen stuff be on top of the snow...much easier to remove then.
I see we are getting that sleet now...just looked out at the Honda and the windows are definitely iced up.

Ya just never know how much rain will fall. If it saturates all the snow you end up with nice expanses of concrete when it freezes up overnight. If not, then it would have been better to wait. Need a crystal ball. :)

We still have snowflakes coming down here but the temp has moved up from 20F to 29-5/16F.

Yep...judgement call...sometimes we make the right decision...sometimes not. Even when it does freeze, I've had reasonably good luck in moving the frozen stuff once I make a first "break through"....although I did bust up my Gator's plow last winter when clearing frozen slush.

Snowing here again...so, I think I'll wait, kick back watch some old movies and have a beer or three...
