Good morning!!!!

   / Good morning!!!! #101,931
One of the guys on my USAFSS Air Crew 68-70, sent me the below poem, this evening. Neither of us know who the author was.

A VETERAN DIED TODAY

He was getting old and paunchy
His hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Joe has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Veteran died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Veteran died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young,
But the passing of a Veteran
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Veteran,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever-waffling stand?

Or would you want a Veteran
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Veteran,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Veteran,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Veteran's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A VETERAN DIED TODAY."

WOW, well said

Good evening all. 61F for the start overcast light south breeze. 61F was out high temp, front passed little before 9AM, brief rain, wind picked up o over 25 mph with peak gust 40-50 mph. Low temp will be a midnight around 27F. Choir practice to start day, took golf cart did not deploy side curtains and did stay dry though the rain. Started the fireplace around 11AM, and worked on it rest of the day. Did get a nap in and we decided not to go to Veterans dinner because of weather.
Happy Veterans Day to ALL veterans!!
Eric, glad to hear grandchildren still ok, no nappy skill issues?
Bill sorry to hear about your cat hope the vat can help.
RNG nice trip report, good to hear nothing happened to ruin it. Hope you get headlight issue worked out.
Drew good luck picking out a new valence. Get your routing issues worked out?
David good luck with the change over, will new generator be hooked into system after that or during?
PJ congrats with the award on guitar, are you happy with how it plays?
Don we just get a small real tree, like the smell and needle fall only once a year :)
Ron, Sassy sure didn't think much of the snow:eek:

prayers for all.

Mostly
New generator will definitely hook into new system like in current system. It will autostart (if selected) based on the chosen triggers - State of Charge, Voltage, Load, Exercise, Must Run.

During the changeover, will use my Honda EU7000 hooked directly to house panel. Will be able to set this quieter generator outside. Good chance it may have to run more than 24 hours continuously while there is no functioning inverter system.

26 right now...high about 30 today. Looks like about an inch of snow and ice, but I haven't been outside. I expect it'll be a slow drive in this morning

Happy to hear you're going with the Radians for your new system, David, they're being proposed for the new system here as well.

Will the Radians be used to trigger autostart on the generators?

FWIW, the Honda EU6500is here ran about 86 hours during the recent round of Public Safety Power Shutoffs. Never skipped a beat, except when it couldn't respond quickly enough to large loads when running in Eco mode. Looked it up, and the operator's manual said that was normal behavior.:confused2:

Coffee is done brewing. 19° with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 23° with mostly cloudy skies. Few more snow flakes fell after Sassy’ picture. Tried to coax her into deeper snow. No way she ran to door. But I did get a measurement on sidewalk that had not been cleaned.

Clean up walkways and driveway this morning. Then decide if we are going to drive up to Port Huron to visit my other aunt.

Good Morning All.

All too easy to light the kitchen range this morning, a few embers from last night plus what he forecasters euphemistically call a "moderate breeze" drawing at the flue pipe had the kettle whistling in no time. Now the rain has caught up too and is lashing against the window pane.

Will she pose in the uncleared 10" snow?:D

 Hope Sassey didn't hear that or she will be hiding in the cupboard again.

Hard hitting poem Rick, thanks for posting.

We watched a program last night about the Allied landings in Italy, following the progress of an ordinary (if there is such a thing) WW2 medic. Throughout the program a handful of surviving veterans would tell some of their memories and occasionally sing a verse from "D-Day Dodgers", with a glint in their eye from it's tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

We're the D-Day dodgers, out here in Italy
Always drinking vino, always on a spree
Eighth Army scroungers and their tanks
We go to war in ties, like swanks
We are the D-Day Dodgers
Way out in Italy

We landed in Salerno, a holiday with pay
Jerry brought the band out to cheer us on our way
Showed us the sights and gave us tea
We all sang songs, the beer was free
To welcome D-Day Dodgers
To sunny Italy

Salerno and Cassino, were taken in our stride
We didn't go to fight there, we went there for the ride
Anzio and Sanzio were just names
We only went to look for dames
The artful D-Day Dodgers
Out here in Italy

And many other verses, although the closing one never fails to bring a lump to my throat at the poignant reminder of how the war ended for many that my dad served with in Africa and Italy.

If you look around the mountains in the mud and rain
You'll find scattered crosses, some which bear no name
Heart break and toil and suffering gone
The boys beneath them slumber on
For they're the D-Day Dodgers
Who stayed in Italy

Good morning.
6 is the temp right now, the coldest we've been this season. Going to a high of 10 °F. Wind N 9 gusting to 25 mph. 30% chnce of flurries.

Blood tests for the DIL this fine frosty morning. So I get to haul her bu^t into town.

The cat has enlarged kidneys, about twice the size of normal ones. She was running a fever, too. She did NOT care for the thermometer/telephone pole going in but she was real happy when it come out. I mixed up a slurry of salmon and water run through a blender to liquidify the salmon. Over night, because she is pampered, normally through the day she gets it on my bed, then at night it all goes down beside my desk. There was 1/3 of the fresh cat food was gone and all the liquid from the salmon. Someone/some cat out of the 5 others we have had a feast if Smokie didn't.
With the BH off until spring, if she croaks now, she will go into the small deepfreezer until spring. We already have about 3-4" of frost in the ground and I will NOT break my back trying to dig through it.

That is about all I am going to do today, maybe plow but don't hold your breath.

Have a good day all
