GM recalls 721K trucks with 6.2L engine

They are using a 0W-40, actually. Yes probably synthetic. The specific brand of oil does not really matter so much as the viscosity grade. So any good synthetic 0w40 or 5w40 would work fine. make sure it is "dexos" compliant, should say on the jug. Dexos is GM's oil quality specification.

Edit: I googled for dexos compliant 40 weight oils and am not finding much yet. Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40 is terrific oil but i can't confirm dexos on it.
edit #2: You'd be good with that. Here's the official list:

We recently went used truck shopping since my wife totaled out our 1 ton and decided to go back to a 1/2 ton.

Looked at a real nice 2022 chevy. Seen it had a 6.2 and walked away. It's still there.

Engine sounded good but not gonna take the risk.

I only have a GM 5.3L engine, but I switched to a heaver motor oil @ 88K miles. Engine runs quieter and it seems like power output is a tad better (AT shifts less), mileage did not change.

Disaster for people who use their truck to make a living.
The neighbor has six 1/2 tons with the 6.2 in his fleet. He has had no problems yet. He also has a bunch of 3/4 and 1 tons.

BTW....the 6.2 crank journals are the same size as the 5.3 and use the exact same bearings. Bad cranks from one supplier can cause quite the problem.

I talked to my dealer, who is also a friend, about trading in my 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 on a new model. He said trade in values are down now due to the recall and recommended I wait until the issue is resolved..

I had a similar situation with a dealer/friend. Usually that will get you a better trade in if you bought it there. Now they don't even want their own vehicles back.

Engine factory debris? Baloney.
Manufacturing debris is caught in the oil filter with the first few hundred oil passes, which happens before you even take possession from a dealer.
I read there’s a manufacturing defect in the rods, and or crankshaft.
Funny thing is, the engine code they will fail for, is , crankshaft-camshaft mis-synchronous, which isn’t a camshaft, crankshaft responsibility.

In any case, specifying a higher viscosity oil on engines not flagging crank-cam sync issues, is certainly not a fix, and it’s not a “fix” for engines not built from faulty rods, or crankshafts.
It only speaks for GM trying to band-aid, an engine design flaw, by masking it with requiring thicker oil at temperature
From most of the new reports this is related to poor machining tolerances, surface finishing protocols and lack of pre assembly flushing. The design is sound. I have not seen any recent rod failures that were not a direct result of poor rod bearing -crank machining/clearances and finish quality.

That plant in Mexico really made a mess of things, still no excuse that this was not caught somewhere else before 800K engines were built. I still dislike that 0W-20 oil as well.

The 10 speed transmission valve bodies are junk as well. Nothing like having your new truck intermittently lock up the rear tires at 70 MPH. I bet Allison regrets licensing their Name to be used on GM trucks with GM transmissions about now.

I am a Believer that Cummins has great diesels and even the new fuel agnostic six has some amazing specs. ~450 ft lbs. at 600 RPM even for the base model and lowest HP version.

That has to be some kind of record setter for a stock 87 octane gasoline powered engine. Should pull a trailer well from a dead stop without revving the engine,

Would love to see a new TV ad with a Ford running their OHC 6.2 gas Camera switching between the B6.7 Octane Cummins six and the Ford V8 with a really heavy trailer stopped on a hill and then pulling the brake and see each one move the load up the hill. They could even let the Ford have the 4.30 gears.
Ford revving 4000 - 5000 RPMs, Cummins loafing along at 1400-2000 RPM's.

My nephew -same one that had the diesel in the oil on the 2012 model, really wants to try that new engine out in a truck. I Really Hope RAM decides to sell an HD 2500-3500 with that engine and Of Course keep the Cummins Diesel six's into the next couple decades.
Well said.
You want a proper engine for a truck?
Let a proper truck engine company like Cummins build it for you.
The car companies like GM & Ford can stick to pasting “off road” or “tremor” decals to the truck beds. They’re good at that. lol
The big 3 laid-off all their heavy truck drivetrain engineers and experts 40 years ago.
What’s left at GM & Ford is a small group of car engine engineers trying to slap together upgraded car drivetrains and call them trucks. Their success is mostly in marketing hype.

At least Ram knows to buy a proper truck engine and transmission from a vendor who has built serious truck engines and transmissions (Cummins, Aisin, ZF) for decades. But I guess that doesn’t matter in the 500 horsepower world of hype trucks.

Thats why I buy Ram. Who knows, maybe GM or Ford will re-hire some truck engineers and start delivering trucks made for working people like they did long ago and not trucks for soccer moms and low-T dads.

Rant over.

I guess you already forgot about all the bad blocks Cummins had, that rods went out the side of.

My buddy had one of them, it was a nightmare for him.
