Glossary of Tractor Terms

   / Glossary of Tractor Terms #21
This should be a very handy list. In the auto industry we are waaaaay to used to abbreviations:

OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer
SAE - Society of Automotive Engineers (yes, there is tractor stuff in the SAE publications. They even have an off-highway arm)

For those into trailering and such, there are a lot of abbreviations to consider when sizing tow vehicles and trailers:

GVWR - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (already mentioned)
GVW - Gross Vehicle Weight (actual weight)
GCVWR - Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (tow vehicle plus trailer)
GCVW - Gross Combined Vehicle Weight (actual weight)
GFAWR - Gross Front Axle Weight Rating
GFAW - Gross Front Axle Weight (actual weight)
GRAWR - Sames as above for rear axle
GRAW - ditto

I could go on...

Please do! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif We can have sections on related things, if not tractor stuff (trailers, for example)...

Not sure how far you want to go with this, but maybe you could have a section on colloquialisms, too. I've been slowed down more than once when I first encountered some of these:

AKA = also known as
BTW = by the way
FWIW = for what it's worth
FYI = for your interest
IMO = in my opinion
IMHO = in my humble opinion

There are others which I can't recall at the moment, but you get the idea. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Derek, you beat me to the punch. I was checking to see if SAE had a similar list on their site. There are so many that they have them in a book! Of course they want you to buy to book so there is no list on the site /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

My quick attempt to find something else netted a bunch of overseas sites!

The one you found looks pretty good. Way to go!

Rob

Are you an engineer in the automotive feild? I'm so happy about the SAE J1930 (I think it's J1930) regulation -> common termonology for all components regardless of manufacturer. Make my life a lot easier. You mean like Asia overseas, that't what I got. How much is the book or should one say bible?

Thanks for straightening me out on "LOL".

In my past lives I have known that to mean "Lot Of Luck" or "Lots Of Love".

When I saw it appear on this board I was a little concerned. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
