Oil & Fuel gear oil

Can somebody inform me about the gear oil I can use for my YM2310 (Axis drive). Has somebody a simple manual of this tractor? I tried to read the japanese letters, but my japanese is not that good.

What are you really asking? I don't know what axis drive is, but if you have a 2wd YM2310 it does not use gear oil, only universal Hy/Tran in the transmission. If you have a 4wd YM2310D, it uses 90wt gear oil in the front axle.

Thank you for your reply. We are not so wellknown with tractors. We have a YM2310 (2wd). We had a leak - I don't know if it's called gearbox, but it's under the seat - we pourred the oil. There is a orange lid with oil written on it. Now we doubt what to apply. Some people say we have to use SAE40 and some 90.

The transmission and hydraulic system share the same oil. I would use a JD303 hy/tran oil or equivalent oil. Hy/tran means hydraulic and transmission oil.

This is your Hydraulic and transmission resivoir. It does not take engine oil, or dextron/mecron transmission fluid. It takes the specific hydraulic/transmission fluid. In your area might come un a bucket that just has the brand name and "JD 303" on it, like generics do around here.

Old tractors did use 40wt or 90wt in the transmissions. Like 8n's or old massys or allises.

You can change the oil in the transmission to Dextron Automatic Transmission Fluid and it will work well in your powershift transmission and hydraulic or use the JD 303 spec hydraulic oil. Do NOT use 40wt or gear oil in the transmission. On your tractor you only have engine oil and transmission--in the engine use a good multi-grade engine oil, in the transmission use JD 303 or Dextron ATF.

I'm not that familiar with a YM2310, but I can't think of anything under the seat that would have "OIL" written on it. All writing should be in Japanese. A picture would help.

Another question is why do the numbers have 1 and 4 in the same place? How can you be in low and hit 1 and 4 in the same place?

when Your in Low range you have gears 1-2-3-5..........
when you shift into High range gears you then have 4-6-7-8...
I rarely use the low gears 1 & 2 ... if I'm in low I'll either use 3 or 5
same thing when in high gears I rarely use 7-8.. . but do use more often then any the 4 & 6 gears, and far as explaining why they didn't simply use
1-2-3-4 as low and 5-6-7-8 as high I truly don't know... One of them Jap things I guess,
I use another brand Hydra/trans fluid called ( Accel 303 ) I get it from TSC for around 30.00 per 5 gals.

Correct. Actually I can't think of any Yanmar that doesn't use a Hy/Tran oil in the transmission. I like a multiweight 75/80w-90 gear oil in the front axle.

Hy/Tran oil is a surprising light viscosity oil for a transmission and that is surprising at first sight. But it apparently has a high and durable shear strength because it has to run between the gears of the tranny and gear pump while being light enough to work in the cylinders of a hydraulic system. Power shift is a hydraulic system with lots of seals. So the oil also needs to be compatible with a broad range of synthetic seals, but doesn't need to stand up to combustion.

The price for the recommended true JD303 Trans/Hydraulic fluid from the John Deere dealer stunned me. But I bought it...reluctantly... Maybe that's why lots of people use "just-as-good-as" from the farm store. There you can buy gallon jugs of Hy/Tran which claims to meet JD303 specs. Apparently it is good enough. I've not heard of any problems with any of the JD303 knock offs even though they are brands of oil nobody has ever heard of.

Though if a fellow really wants to save dollars and be ecological then why not buy real JD303 and re-use it? After all, it was designed to go thousands of hours in commercial equipment under much higher load, temperature, & pressures than our little tractors will ever see.
I got to noticing that the JD303 that is drained out of my Yanmars looks just like it did going in. So I ran a simple viscosity test that shows that to be unchanged. And that made me think: If viscosity hasn't changed and the color looks new then it is a good bet that lubricity hasn't changed. I didn't check the [pH], and probably should - though without any water in there and no color change I doubt [pH] has changed either. I'll sure check that next time.

And why should the old JD303 not be good as new? After all, the system is completely sealed and has not one but two of the best particle filters this mechanic has ever seen. We know our tractors don't stress the oil anywhere near what the oil is designed to take. And I change at intervals of hundreds rather than thousands of hours. As for suspended particles smaller than the filters can handle - and there are bound to be some - well, nobody has yet has devised a better separation method than letting it settle undisturbed for months. So that's what I'm doing. Letting it settle, siphoning it into clean containers and reusing it.

On the same note, I'm beginning to wonder just how much trouble it would be to refresh the old motor oil too. That's way more of a chemistry project, but surely it is doable for the person willing to take the time. I hate to just waste the stuff.

Your shifting pattern indicates a tractor with a manual transmission with a 2 speed range--the YM 2310 has a powershift transmission. The powershift has 2 gear shift levers, one for the range 1-4 (I believe that is true) and the powershift (R--3). I have included a picture of the deck of a 2310.

If yours does not match this picture (courtesy of Fredrick's Tractor--second pic is from a tractor dealer in Lithuania), then look by your left heel when sitting on the tractor and tell us the numbers that you find.

The Accel oils are not new to the market or as some might think to be a Generic oil, the name Accel has been around for quite some time through the Racing industry, many of the Hi-performance electronic parts such as dist, coil pacs,plug wires, and Gauges are that of Accel, although not quite sure how they come to marketing oil, One could probably do some research and in their findings might be just the same as another more popular name brand of oil, apparently it is being manufactured and sold through farming as a 2nd choise to the "Name Brand JD" which everyone knows something having the name John Deere the price is about 30% higher

Yea i realize my shift pattern as well as shifter will not look like his. I posted the picture for Norm who said that it should only have japaneese letters on it. That was the only reason i posted a picture, purely for the oil cap. To get it to focus on my auto focus kodak m853 camera i had to pull out to that distance.

I am a forester who basically oversees the harvesting operations by loggers on various federal properties. The ones i generally have use first class equiptment, printece, tigercat, cat, john deere, etc. Now a days few people still have stuff in warrenty so many things are 3-7 years old for tractors and cutters, the loaders last longer 9-11 years. Weather on equiptment under warrenty or out, most will use the oil that they grab at NAPA, the loacal parts place or even the fuel distributer they use. These are brands like coastal, marvel and a few others of the generic. All engine oil used is either delo, or rotella t. In this case were talking about almost 200hp tractors (skidders) that cost $150,000+ dollars, generally more on the + side. They seem to work for them, not arguing with you but to put 303 on the side i think they have to meet the spec cause all it takes is some guy to test it and find it not and sue them for mislabeling with testing of product.

It is true maybe the JD brand has more stabilizers and ph inhibitors etc i dont know, but loggers tend to loose it at the rate where it wont be in there for 2000 hours. They blow a hose and spray 20 gallons out so they add 20 gallons or have a cylinder leak and add 5 gallons over 2 weeks etc.

I figure the numbers relate to the final drive ratio.

My wife's cousin has a little truck driving experience. When he saw my 1500 he commented, "That is a rather complex shifting pattern." Guess it would be if you wanted to go through the gears in sequence.

Yep, I find that "OIL" thing surprising, (or maybe it says "710". Never noticed on my YM2000B after 10 years. Will have to take a look. BTW, that LO-1,2,3,5, HI-4,6,7,8 is because the top gear in LO range, (5), is a higher ratio than the bottom gear, (4), in Hi range.

Wow i though it seemed like that NOrm. Thanks for pointing that out, it always bugged me not knowing why. Arabic numbers are aribic numbers weather in Jap or english. Thanks for that info.
