Oil & Fuel Fuel cans

   / Fuel cans #41
I've got one of the no spill cans for my Bolens. I put a kneeler pad on the hood and tip the can so the spout fits into the filler. Then I use the push button, no sweat. Sometimes I do stand on the tire.

I use these kind of containers and have about 8 of them. We keep them in a shed well away from the barn and house.

For fill ups, the big yellow JD tractor is easy. The whole tractor is built to be used. The tank is down low, it has a huge lockable tank filler opening, a place to put the lid, and a platform for resting 5 gallon jugs on while you fill it

I like our Kubota a lot. But like so much on the tractor, the filling of the fuel was designed by someone who never had done that job. So I can either stand on the front tire and hoist one of these up to chest level.... and hold it there while it empties - or just drive down to the fuel shed and use our battery powered transfer pump.

It’s the only no-spill nozzle that works reliably, just slow. Added vent really speeds fill ups. They’re perfect for the little B26. Have the nozzle extension tube but haven’t tried them on the M59.

Lot of good options folks have figured out. Like my large flexible nozzle Justrite safety cans except for being heavy and scratching my hood. Flame arrestor screen on fill port would prevent using a pump.

We have gotten to be connoisseurs of sturdy steps and step stools to be able to reach and work like we use to. Little giant makes some nice ones.

I think this started about fuel can "technology" and got routed into ways to avoid lifting fuel cans... and I can relate.

If nothing else, balancing a 5-gallon full can while filling, typically where there is no rest spot, is for the birds. When I built my new tractor shed, I put a fuel can shelf at the door. High enough to give me flow into all small-engine tanks. The red gas can (91 octane, no ethanol is what I get at my rural gas station for marked fuel..) uses a "flo-n-go" siphon nozzle, which is a dream. I even tried to use one for diesel, but it doesn't want to prime properly.

Finally, I got a 2-D-cell fuel pump with a goofy hose which moves the diesel into Cliffy at a half-decent rate. I'm hoping to fit a decent hose (longer) onto the pump outlet soon.

I've had it with those fuel cans. I ditched 'em all and installed this near the garage door:

I put a 110V fuel transfer pump on the 500 gal. fuel oil tank for my oil burner. In my state, home heating oil has to be ultra low sulfur, so it burns just fine in my tractors.

End of hassle.

I use the tank I have in the back of the truck that I use to fill the truck when we tow our fifth wheel.

Love the video of the lady filling the plastic bag with gasoline. I once ran a call where the wife filled her washing machine with gasoline to wash her husband's greasy clothes. Since I was a firefighter you can guess the outcome.

Sometimes the sheer stupidity of people still amazes me. I wonder what ever made her think that was a good idea?

Yeah, 5 gallons of fuel has grown heavier over the years.
But luckily I have a FEL with bucket.
Put the container in the bucket, siphon into tractor.

After 32 years on the job I could fill a book with stupid ideas that kept me employed and let's face it; we all do stupid things sometime in our life and most often we get away with it. Heck as a teenager I washed the floor of a gas station every morning for a year with gasoline and got away without blowing myself up. Sometimes God just looks out for us.

I gave up on lifting 5 gallon jugs. Too old, too heavy, unwieldly trying to hold up. Found a new 55 gallon drum and installed a standard home heating fuel oil fill and vent on it. Used a 12volt Amazon 'special' diesel pump kit that included the pump, hose, handle and input hose and strainer. It pumps at about 15gpm. Mounted it on a nice drum dolly that really rolls easily! I replaced the cord and large alligator clips with a 20' cable and a connector that mates with one I put on the fel cross support.

At my age I really enjoy the little things!
Very nice!!. I guess, for some reason, simple ideas escape me sometimes. Maybe that is a sign of old age also. I never thought of using the tractor to power the fuel pump. Kinda feel like an idiot - When I saw this picture, I thought, what a great idea. And everyone else probably considered that idea. Very Nice, I LIKE IT!

They’re technically sportsman cans not fuel containers that’s how they avoid that BS. Those are the only 5 gallon jugs I use. Aside from not being saddled with bs they have the best spout of anything I’ve tried even the older cans. They can work with the can 90 degrees or completely upside down which not many other cans can do that and they have a cap to keep trash and water out of the can. They also seal up pretty well to minimize spills even if they turn over. I’ve tried some of the modern production jerry cabs and they’re not half bad but I prefer plastic cans over metal.
Never seen that, mostly referred to as fuel transfer containers.

I’m using Flo Fast. If you watch for sales you can get these cheaper

I found this pump at my John Deere dealership. It has four AA battery’s and a auto shut off nozzle that works great. There are one on button and off button that you just push no hold. I put this can on my Kubota tractor floor board and then attach the hose with a spring loaded clamp Into the tank. This unit pumps real fast with no leaks any were. It comes with extra fuel can fittings to fit a verity of fuel cans. I have a tidy tank i used to use but is to much trouble to load and unload etc. I just take a couple of Gerry cans and fill them so i always have fresh fuel plus no trouble to switch to winter fuel as well.
I Am getting up in age and this works great for me and I would not go to anything else and I have had them all This one works !!!
Will it pump gasoline? My backhoe gas tank is very high so I hafta climb onto the machine with the gas can and then tip the can to fill the tank. Both of my wrists are bone on bone joints. Maneuvering the 5 gallon up on top of the backhoe tank hurts me every time I fill the damn thing.

I've always just added a hole where you did and use a phillips head screwdriver to plug the hole. Those caps look like a better way.

Hmmmm, I see the Flo Fast 15 gallon unit with wheels is $544.58 on Amazon.

I actually just got my Gas and Go 25 gallon on wheels for $283.00 on Amazon.

The Gas and Go uses gravity with it's nozzle but hand pumps can be had for as little as $50.00.

I'm not convinced the Flo Fast is the better option.

Sorry OP, the vent caps you are using look like a great option. I'm pretty sure I could use all 6 that come in the pack. I think my gas cans are multiplying when I'm not looking :)

Cool idea. Is the home heating oil #1 diesel, #2 diesel or kerosene?

Can't decide whether this is good or bad. I use enough Diesel that I have a transfer tank mounted in my truck bed. I only use a can if I'm getting chainsaw gas or wood splitter gas or power washer gas. Everything else is diesel and filled from the transfer tank. I have a strong hate for the new non spill cans....

Just curious if you are here to be part of the forum or have a vested interest in Flo Fast? You have made only 2 posts and they both look like sales pitches.

The product is called #2 home heating oil. It is ultra low sulfur, dyed red, and is the equivalent of #2 diesel fuel. I've used it in all 7 of my Kubota tractors since 1979 with no issues. The temp gets down to -10F here on occasion and even though it's #2, I've never had a problem with it gelling. I filter it twice before filling the tractor and I've never had to replace any tractor fuel filters.

I know others who advise against doing this but it's worked for me for over 40 years.
