It started running bad ,sputter then die, it had been running 4-5 hours before this started. I changed filter and it was dirty and appeared to have some sand, which I am in a sandy area. I changed filter/O-rings, filled with clean fuel from a new can and it ran about 100yrds then same symptom's. I changed filter again and ran about 20', sputter die. I disconnected the feed hose from tank and drained it in a 5 gallon bucket, nothing real obvious. I pulled the filter housing and cleaned the inlet/outlet with carb cleaner, nothing I can see in the filter. I filled it up at the local gas station, filled my truck up with diesel, then the tractor on the initial fill up.. No issues on the truck. I'm guessing sand must have come from filling up in the field with a 5 gallon previously. So is there anything else I need to check before I put it back together? Tomorrow I am going to wash the fuel tank out again with fuel before I assemble it. Any ideas/pointers?

Perhaps confirm the electric lift pump is running, and there is good fuel flow after the pump.

#rscotty is correct that the machine in question has a mechanically driven fuel pump. I had the newer B models in mind when I suggested checking the electric pump.

Like you are doing, I'd be looking for some crud in the fuel tank first. plus checing that the fuel was wintergrade with a deicer. Also, check that the tank is venting properly. Easiest way to do that is just leave the filler cap ajar. If tightening it down causes fuel starvation then there you have it.

If cleaning the tank or vent doesn't do it, look to see if your B2650 one that has a simple rubber hose running from the filter to a fuel pump on the side of the block - and then from that fuel pump up to the head?

Because If that B2650 fuel pump is the one I think it is, in the parts book it does look a lot like the old camshaft driven diaphram fuel pumps that cars used to have. And although that sort of pressure pump looks out of place on a diesel, there it is. Those do go bad, so you probably should check that it is still pushing fuel by pullng a fuel hose up by an injector and see if fuel squirts out when you are cranking it.

Check the oil level before you do any of this. The other way any mechanical fuel pump can go bad is to allow fuel to drain into the engine oil sump. If so, you will see too much on the dipstick and probably smell it.

Cleaned tank, cleaned filter head assembly. fresh fuel and she fired up and ran. PM'd it and ran it hard 2 days straight, life is good. I appreciate the help/advice
