Some people are lucky that way. I'm not. I knew a guy who would buy a box of misc. stuff at an auction for a buck, and then there would be some unexpected valuable china thing in there or a rare book, and he would sell it on E-Bay for a good amount. It seemed to happen all the time. The man died too young of throat cancer, so I don't quite know what to say about ones luck.

That, to me is (pardon the expression) the old school mentality. The way I was raised, because that's how my dad was raised etc etc. My grandad was Korean war my dad was Vietnam, I was not military. My dad did not have a good home life, mine was great by standards. But I saw how my dad dealt with folks, as he did his. That's how I do. I guess if your raised by useless trash, that's how you will act.

Alot of people now get offended if you ask can they take less (I would ask 10%). I remember going places with dad and dang near every time he asked, he payed less. I know his dad was a tightwad, so it makes sense, he saw that. I am very careful about asking folks to come down on a price. If its something for sale, I offer what I feel it's worth. If someone gives me a bid on a project, that's their bid, too high, I don't hire them. I figure they tell me what it takes for them to make an honest living, not a killing. I feel it would be an insult to challenge their price.

That old guy was trying to do right, take what he needed (probably needed nothing) and possibly help the next fella who would get honest use out of it. What he needed was less than he probably deserved. The young guy probably did like his parents did and possibly theirs did too. Tell a sob story, get a deal and make out like bandits. Even though they probably dont have a thing to their name......

My first real W2 job as a teen was a gopher for a car Dealer... learned a lot about human nature...

99.9% of the people that came in made offers and some were real chiselers… some cultures see it as part of the process... the owner's demonstrator on the lot and someone was interested it... spent Saturday and Sunday negotiating through several trips... the guy got mad saying we did not want to sell the car yet it had a price clearly marked... never did make the sale... but Monday it sold to someone else.

One of the sales guys told me everyone buying a car wants a deal... they feel bad if they don't get something off... and I do the same... he would negotiate socks... if I buy 5 will you throw in 1 more?

That's part of my problem; I'm not much on dickering. Tell me what you'll sell it for and I will take it or leave it; or I might ask what's the least you will take. I don't have the time or the interest to stand around "haggling."

I think it’s a pretty stupid system, but you nearly have to play the game.

^^^This is where I think the cultural aspect comes in... but with so many now here from every corner of the world it is also changing.

I went with my cousin and her husband to the Mercedes Dealer in Salzburg Austria... there was a lease return wagon they were interested in.

We exchanged pleasantries with the sales person and my cousin and her husband decided they wanted the car and I asked what are you going to offer? They both looked at me and said offer???

The price is posted and this is Mercedes... they do not negotiate... I then said everything is negotiable and this is a used car to boot.

Getting the look of embarrassment I interjected before they could speak... the sales person also said the price is fixed... to make a long story short I was able to get the price reduced 1200 Euro and extend the warranty for 24 months...

Later they thanked me but said how worried they were to which I said why... because if the situation went South they could always blame the American and we all got a good laugh...

As the salesman was figuring... I offered him my mechanical pencil with a sharp point saying he might be able to do a little better with his figures...

When we left he introduced me to the owner and we had a good laugh when I told them I had worked at a Dealership in San Francisco...

That's pretty much me. Tell me your price. I'll decide if I like it or not.

Sometimes I'll kind of play dumb. When I went to look at the log splitter, I knew the posted price. But at some point I said ' what were you asking for it again' as if I had forgotten. Seller replies, 'well, I was asking this, but I'll take this ($50 less)'. Done. They even delivered it for me.

I'm horrible at haggling, but getting better... With online stuff you have to expect it, as several have stated above just add a little as long as it's still close to normal asking price and you aren't upside down in it you don't have a lot to lose. I've come to accept that the worst thing that can happen is you pay the amount you were willing to pay when you met anyway...

I've had this work for me good and bad, when I bought my fireplace insert off of craigslist I found an Osburn 1800 for $750 with the SS chimney liner which is a reasonable deal, got it from a guy that installed them for a living so figured it must have been ok. The bummer part is he bought it at the Habitat for Humanity Re Store for I think $150, how do I know? he left the price tag on it... and he wouldn't budge on the price seeing as thought it was still a good deal...

The one that worked for me is when we sold my wife's Rav 4, added a few hundred for the haggling room and someone paid asking price without trying to haggle, she drove the thing for I think 3 years and sold it for $800 more than she paid for it... but we did get a good deal when we got it...

I agree with others on the bids for services though, I imagine some people add some haggling room but most people offering services know what it takes to do the job and be competitive. Not that I use many services myself but I'm about to with my shop build.

I was selling a car one time and got a ‘haggler’ who came by to look at it. I told him what I wanted for it and he made me a lowball offer. I politely rejected it and he asked what was the least I would take. I restated the price I had advertised it for. He said he couldn’t pay that much. I replied, “it’s not eating anything so if you change your mind let me know”.

They left and came back in about the time it took to drive around the block and bought it for the asking price.

A lot is in the art of how it is done...

Nothing wrong with offering a price you can live with as buyers remorse comes with it's own set of problems...

I bought a Model A parts car that had been advertised and the ad said firm... drove out to look at it and it had value but nowhere near the frim price... some people not in the know think it is old so it must be valuable.

Left my card with my offer and thanked them for their time... they were cleaning out Grandpa's house to sell...

Three weeks go by and they call and said if my offer is still good come and get it but it had to be tomorrow... I said if it is all there consider it sold.

The down side is more than a few times I have been the hammer... leave a bonafide offer and the next person that comes along with $20 more gets the deal... after all they made more holding out... which is OK.

Surprisingly a few times I have agreed to full price with cash in hand after telling the party I am on my way to arrive and find the item sold for less than I was ready to pay... this has happened a couple of times with trailers...

I was in a somewhat similar situation... bumped into an older acquaintance who was bemoaning he had not been able to sell his Model A Ford... the car was a driver, not show. He had spent a lot of time and money on the mechanicals.

Then I saw him again and he was quite bitter... still no sale and lots of lookers... I did not need another car at 22 years old but asked what will you take and I will spread the word... he said $5500 cash and we left it at that.

I started to think about it that night and said if he was serious I will buy it and did... spent a weekend working out some bugs and detailing and then started driving it to work on Williams Street in San Leandro...

When I got it the car would not go over 35 mph... turned out the throttle linkage was bent... I corrected that and got 60 mph!

Had not owned it a week and someone came to the shop asking about it... said his father had the identical car growing up and wanted to buy it... said it really was not for sale but asked if I could take him around the block after work.

To make a long story short I owned the car two weeks and sold it for $8500 cash and the acquaintance never spoke to me again and would tell anyone that would listen I ripped him off...

A couple of hundred dollars in parts and a weekend of work and $500 at the DMV left me with 2k profit... real money for a kid of 22 making $9.50 an hour.

Always be happy in your trade. My father worked for a very smart business man and he had that saying.

Several years ago we sold a large high HP tractor to a neighbor and distant relatives. They planned on using the tractor but after a couple years decided to sell it. They were fortunate to find a buyer online that collected those tractors and made a profit. Don't bother me in the least. I feel sorry for folk that get mad and hold grudges over stuff like that.
