I stopped to check out a truck for sale on the side on the road one time and older gentleman stopped right after me to look at it. I forget the asking price, but the other guy said that he just sold that truck to a young guy the day before. Said that he was asking what it's listed for right now, but the young guy gave him such a story that he felt sorry for him and let it go for a lot less then he was asking. Seeing it for sale right away made him feel like he was taken advantage of. I felt sorry for him, but I also thought that he shouldn't care what was done with it once he sold it, just that he got his money for it. But I also understand being lied to.
That, to me is (pardon the expression) the old school mentality. The way I was raised, because that's how my dad was raised etc etc. My grandad was Korean war my dad was Vietnam, I was not military. My dad did not have a good home life, mine was great by standards. But I saw how my dad dealt with folks, as he did his. That's how I do. I guess if your raised by useless trash, that's how you will act.

Alot of people now get offended if you ask can they take less (I would ask 10%). I remember going places with dad and dang near every time he asked, he payed less. I know his dad was a tightwad, so it makes sense, he saw that. I am very careful about asking folks to come down on a price. If its something for sale, I offer what I feel it's worth. If someone gives me a bid on a project, that's their bid, too high, I don't hire them. I figure they tell me what it takes for them to make an honest living, not a killing. I feel it would be an insult to challenge their price.

That old guy was trying to do right, take what he needed (probably needed nothing) and possibly help the next fella who would get honest use out of it. What he needed was less than he probably deserved. The young guy probably did like his parents did and possibly theirs did too. Tell a sob story, get a deal and make out like bandits. Even though they probably dont have a thing to their name......

A very interestingly honest perspective.

“Buy the car, not the story.” Pertains to selling as well.

Can’t tell you how many M1 Garand’s I’ve seen advertised as “Vet bring-backs.” They are virtually all DCM/CMP rifles bought years later. I’ve found one M1 Carbine bring-back, and it’s not for sale.

Some people will take offense at anything. I see no problem with bargaining to get a lower price, whether it's a Craigslist item or a contractor offering a service. If the seller won't come down, it's your call to either pay full price or walk away.
I think what gets people ticked off is insultingly lowball offers, often sight unseen. Again, as a seller it's your prerogative to say "no thanks".

I get that the old man in Eddie's story might be upset that he was lied to, but he did accept what was offered. We had something similar with an old VW my wife picked up as a project car. It turned out to be more of a basket case than we originally thought, and sold it fairly cheap to a young couple who implied that they were going to fix it up. A couple months later a neighbor pointed it out to me on CL being offered for ~3x what we sold it for. I don't know if they intended all along to flip it, or if they discovered what we did about its condition and figured they'd find a bigger fool, or what. Dunno what ever happened to it, but we were rid of it and in the end that's all we wanted.

Are you referring to reproductions being passed off as legitimate military rifles (honest question, not a gun guy myself)? Unfortunately a lot of that going around with any potentially nostalgic or collectable item.

Agree on tuning out the sob story/sales pitch.

Often it's as you suggest; I price things for a fair price or less, so please don't waste my with a lowball offer when you don't know a thing about the item. Also, there are some who will pick every little thing apart even though it has a good price on it; if you want a truck with Bluetooth, why are you looking at my 15 year old $3000 truck? What always amazes me though is how some people will turn down a really good deal just because the seller won't come down. I once picked up an Old Town canoe in nearly new condition with a pair of nice ash paddles and two Stearns life jackets. I sold the canoe the next day for what I paid for it, and would have asked more if it wasn't to my neighbor; sold the paddles for $50.00, and still use the life jackets.

I was second in line, standing there waiting to buy it and heard the first person try to haggle. They hadn't even gotten back into their car when I handed over the cash.

When I was looking for 8' florescent light fixtures for my garage didnt have any trouble at all, must have been our good luck.
Two trips to Vermont, 1 to Rhode Island, Amsterdam for 4 lights, and finally the remaining 17 came from a trip to Tupper Lake, nice ride for my wife and I, interesting people during this whole search for lights.

When I’m selling something offer whatever you want and I’ll either decline or take it but leave the sad story out. And I don’t care negotiate something I’m selling but when I quote a job that’s that. Take it or leave it and if Jim bob told you half that much hire them.

I always add a little room for bargaining. If I want $200.00, I ask $235.00. Then the person feels like they made a good deat at $200.00. If someone offers me a hundred, I counter with $250.00.

Unfortunately, it raises the initial price appeal. You have to know if what you are selling is hard to find, or a dime a dozen.

Trying to sell a 3ph sweeper that I had sandblasted and painted, new decals. I found out that used sweepers are worth very little. I don't know why. I had one good offer, I should have taken. Now it's a stale listing with an asking price that just keeps going down.

I was in a somewhat similar situation... bumped into an older acquaintance who was bemoaning he had not been able to sell his Model A Ford... the car was a driver, not show. He had spent a lot of time and money on the mechanicals.

Then I saw him again and he was quite bitter... still no sale and lots of lookers... I did not need another car at 22 years old but asked what will you take and I will spread the word... he said $5500 cash and we left it at that.

I started to think about it that night and said if he was serious I will buy it and did... spent a weekend working out some bugs and detailing and then started driving it to work on Williams Street in San Leandro...

When I got it the car would not go over 35 mph... turned out the throttle linkage was bent... I corrected that and got 60 mph!

Had not owned it a week and someone came to the shop asking about it... said his father had the identical car growing up and wanted to buy it... said it really was not for sale but asked if I could take him around the block after work.

To make a long story short I owned the car two weeks and sold it for $8500 cash and the acquaintance never spoke to me again and would tell anyone that would listen I ripped him off...

A couple of hundred dollars in parts and a weekend of work and $500 at the DMV left me with 2k profit... real money for a kid of 22 making $9.50 an hour.
