I bought a very nice Kubota L225 on FB Marketplace for an excellent price - it was an hour away. I think I lucked out because plenty of folks can't be bothered to try to use it. I didn't bring a trailer and didn't commit to buy right away - but I followed up very quickly to commit to buy and set a date to pickup. I think it helps give leverage and removes the "I need to buy it because I came so far"

That doesn't mean that it's true. When I sold my Toyota with a paunched engine the exact opposite was true; the guys showed up with a wrecker, and thought it was up to me to sell them something to go back with. When I wouldn't come down on the pickup (the 3 month old tires cost more than I was asking for the entire pickup) they began eyeing the Celebrity which I was still running.

I usually go ready to buy and pick up whatever it is I'm looking at if I'm making a trip to it. If I just see it going past and stop it's different.

IF I make an offer I'm ready to pay and load it. If we can't make a deal then that's fine. I didn't pay more than I wanted and the seller shouldn't feel gyped.

If they tell me to come back later because they have someone else coming and they want to see if he will out bid me I make it clear that I have money and a means to take it right then but if I leave I will not be coming back.

Now, I have broken that promise but only with substantial reduction in price or other concessions. And I must really want it and couldn't find a substitute.

When I bought my disc harrow I was on my way to my parent's so didn't have a trailer. It was only about 50 miles out of my way, over in OldPath's neighborhood; but it's all narrow, twisty goat paths to get there and turned out to be a PITA.
