We got hit with a rain storm in between snow storms this winter and there is a layer of ice under everything. While this was happening, I was asked to help manage a horse bording operation.

We have a Ford 8N that we are trying to use to haul the manure spreader down to the pile. Have some old chains on the tractor but nothing in the tires. Often get hung up on the ice and can't move even after unhooking the spreader.

Would filling the tires and getting more aggresive chains help, or is the tractor just too small?

A pic or two of what you are tempting to do will help a lot in answering your question. Have no good way of knowing what "haul the manure spreader down to the pile" really means. :) But don't be offended by the need for more info.

More aggressive chains should help.

Ones that have v-bars or spikes sticking out in a very aggressive pattern.:D

Good point. I'll be going out there tonight and will take some pictures to post.

Not sure if weight would help. I don’t suppose it could hurt, but I would agree that better chains are probably the answer. Are your chains slipping in between the lugs of the tires?

weight never hurts. i'd fill the tires with winter ww fluid.. or water and cacl if you have good tubes. beet juice if you can afford it.

I have had the double ring chains on my 8N for about 20 years. They work very well, just remember, anything can get stuck and if you push the envelope you will get stuck. If you have tubes in the rears, CaCl solution can't be beat. (But I do have Beet in my Kubota rears)

Weight won't do anything without traction. Now if you have a FEL and your rear is light then obviously some rear ballast would be helpfull. Just adding weight may not help anything, especially on a sheet of ice.
