Does the camshaft just slide out or is it held in by something else?

It will slide out just make sure all the tappets are up against the block so one of them does not hang on the cam as you try to remove it. I usually flip the block upside down before removing the cam. On a side note there are NO cam bearings if that is the reason you are removing it thinking to replace them.

Thanks for the information. Lifters are all rusted in place, I got them to each move to top of lobe so hopefully will come out
