We have an old Ford 1210 diesel tractor, 2 WD, the pitman arm has moved away from the steering housing about one half inch. We are unsure if the arm is just coming off the shaft or whether the shaft is moving out of the housing. We see about one half inch of the shaft showing and it has ridges. We tried to hammer the arm back on but it didn't move. WE are trying to figure out if we can fix it ourselves or have it repaired.

Pictures would help. I cannot visualize from your description.

Does the steering freeplay seem to have increased? Looks like the position of the shaft in question is controlled by the adjustment on the opposite end. Try loosening the lock nut and backing out the adjustment stem to see if that pulls the shaft back into the gearbox.
