I just got a used woodstove (a real nice one) from an old friend who has more $$$ than time. The firebricks that line the inside have fallen apart and it needs to have them all put back in place and cemented in. Now what kind of cement do ya use for that? The steel making up the stove is perfect. I think the construction workers just banged it around taking it out of her newly remodeled house.

DrDan,

We used to have an old woodstove lined with firebrick. But there were "grooves" that the bricks slid into, and they held in place that way, with no need for cement. Take a close look inside the box.

While good old Portland cement would probably last for many years, a special "refractory cement" is used specifally for fireboxes.

Try: Lehman's "CASTABLE FIREBRICK" on page 104 of the 2000 catalog; it's not cheap but does the job, 12.5 pounds, $25.00 check their web site: http://budgetcastingsupply.com.

And, always, your local Home Depot...

Hope this helps.

Ditto here, Dan. In fact, I've never seen one where the bricks were locked into place and always assumed it was to provide room for expansion/contraction in the box. Stick your head in there and look around. In our Hearthstone, you can easily take the bricks out and stick a shopvac nozzle into the flue to suck out the creosote after running a brush down the pipe.

The stuff is called fireclay. Comes in a can like paint but is much thicker, like peanut butter. Get it at any brick or block supply.
