Gomez, I have tried several of the fireplaces mentioned here. As mentioned a zero clearance (really reduced clearance fireplace) is a great option. I have once owned the Vermont Castings Winter Warm which is a catalytic type. I thought it was OK. I installed a non catalytic reduced clearance in our cabin called a Regency. It is the best one thus far. Check out their website and check for yourself. Extrodinaire (sp) is also another brand that is big in size and uses a catalytic converter. The new fireplaces come very close to matching the performance of the stoves and burn times. Rat...

Thanks to all for the other options. We have been looking at possibilities for a fireplace/woodstove/insert that could be used as an auxilary heat source for our house.
