Traction Finally yanked my boat out with a B2320

I've been trying for years to get my boat out with something less than my Jeep.

I decided to give it one more go. Before using my new Jeep which I really didn't want to cover in sand just yet.

Loaded up front end loader with wet sand.

Weaved ropes on front tires as a wimpy chain (I don't think this helped)

Left boat hanging off the back of trailer so it would float longer (I don't think this helped, maybe made it worse.)

My first attempt, I had Transfer Case in Low and Transmission in 1st gear (lowest gear).

It was going real smooth and then it just stopped and dug in.

The Jeep "Paddles" through the sand.

I didn't think the little 23HP Kubota had enough torque in a much higher gear and never tried it.

So I put the Transfer case in Medium and Transmission in 2nd. It got further. I was ready to quit, when I realized I had the break on, Grrrrr.

Tried it again with break off and it cruised right out. 4500 LBS in very soft sand, on Turf tires (and tires did load up instantly).

I wanted to also lock the left/right rear Diff. So I used the hand throttle at WOT. So I kept my right foot on the Diff Lock and let out the clutch.

Momentum was the trick and paddling through to keep the momentum going.

Since the sand "let go" the tractor still had the Torque (to paddle) at this higher gear. If it had full traction, with that weight, in that high gear it would have stalled.

I really meant years. And this was right after my leaving the break on.

I have the video of leaving the break on and my discovery of that minor lapse of memory. It is so **** funny. Lots of 4 letter words.

Agree, I didn't see any real struggle, nor would I have thought there'd be much. Compare pulling that boat out to pulling a box blade full of dirt with the scarifiers down. I would expect that latter to be a tougher job. All the same, glad it worked out for you, mswlogo, and you kept your Jeep "high and dry".

Perhaps you and Dodgeman are not familiar with the dynamics of retrieving boats on a beach (or sand driving in general). Its not about power. Its all about momentum. The tractor has ample power, as Mswlogo knows, but it often cannot accelerate quickly enough to power through the soft sand before the wheels lose traction and start spinning. You need to rapidly get up to a speed where the weight of the boat is helping to 'push' the boat through the soft sand rather than dragging it backwards. I pull out my boat with a little 1.3 litre Suzuki Sierra (a Samurai to you). It has no power but it has the required acceleration and traction.

The critical time starts around the 8 second mark. The tractor is already at top speed in its chosen gear. Its around here that Mswlogo's stomach starts to knot up as he feels the wheels start to bog down and spin.


(edit. My comments above apply to 4wd cars and small tractors. Big tractors with big aggressive ag tyres can often just 'dig' their way to the top of the beach.)

Nice. I pull my boat ~6k lb boat around with my b2920 in M a lot, it's amazing how much pulling power these little tractors have! Impressive you were able to do it in the sand!

You could use a tongue extension on the trailer and keep the tow vehicle on solid ground. A piece of pipe with a coupler on one end and a ball on the other is the basic version. You could add a pair of wheels to the trailer end to keep the nose of the trailer up. A friend of mine used to launch and retrieve his 26' sailboat at ramps designed with very low slopes, intended for small fishing boats. Actually had people tell him "you can't launch that here", even as they watched him do it. Just a heavy pipe, about 20' or so long, and an old Dodge station wagon.

It does look like a breeze. But believe me it didn't the 9 attempts before (all going too slow and just digging itself in). I even traded up from BX24.

I just never considered trying it in 5th gear (counter intuitive). In first gear it will not come out.

With a full box blade, say going up a hill, it's just the reverse. 5th would stall (or burn up clutch) and 1st would have no problem.

In the boat/sand case 5th Gear got speed/momentum up quick while the boat was not much load and 5th paddled more sand through to keep it going.

Another way to think of it, is. If that was a paved Boat Ramp (good traction) you would not want 5th with max RPM. You'd use low gear and take it easy.

It's exactly how the Jeep always pulled it out. But I never thought the little 23 HP motor could have enough speed and torque. So I always maxed torque and tried slow.

Too bad first Video didn't come out. It was super quality but the SD Card filled up (I took the boat for a spin to get conditioner in the lines). Then my wife used her phone for the successful attempt.

Backup. And bringing boat for service. Towing Kubota. Love the new GC Jeep, my 3rd since 96.

I was a little worried too that the tires on the new Jeep were not aggressive enough, great on MPG though.

That is a fine boat, made for waterskiing. Do you use it as intended?
