KennK, I think you are way over analyzing this. Fill it with one thing or another and geto on with life. Try sand. If it's too light, remove it and go cement, or stone. I'd heed the suggestions to work the top for storage or other things. I intend on adding PVC tubes to allow me to put a rake of shovel in becaise it seems that when I need ballast, I need a rake and a shovel while working the loader.
I may consider putting a bit of sand in the bottom of mine and making some cement blocks that just fit in. Then putting sand around the outer perimeter and betwen blocks to prevent them from moving around. Then, I may cap it off with and inch topping of cement that I can easily break out if I ever need to load the box differently (who knows when I'll trade tractors again). I most certainly intend on installing a hitch on the back of the ballast box first, though.
