Fence Line App for my phone?

I was hoping that a GPS program existed that I could draw a straight line between pins on my phone and then figure out where the line is by walking between the pins.

Any of the apps can do this. The problem is that the unassisted consumer GPS is not accurate enough to do this to mark a property line. There are systems which can correct the GPS signal, but they are expensive.

Figuring out where the fence post will go in the purple circle is my goal. If I go into my neighbors land, I'm going to be on the Gas Pipeline Right of Way. If I go into my land, I'm giving up my land. A foot doesn't matter too much, but several feet makes me uncomfortable.

You aren't really giving up any ownership rights by putting up a fence. A lot of people wit rural property designate the fence with signs stating "Fence does not indicate property line" or some such language. As long as you and your neighbor understand that it's cool.

Since you only care about the NE border, and if the pipeline is a known offset from your property line, could you rent a magnetometer, sweep to find the pipeline, and measure 25' SW to get to where you want to be? Magnetometers are pretty cheap to rent here.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I never thought of that. I wonder if a metal detector would work?

I did think about calling 811, the Before you Dig Number, and having them come out. But I would be lying to them because the pipe isn't on my land and I'm not going to dig anywhere near the pipe. But then again, I am going to be working near it and it might be wise to have them mark it.

Yeah, there. North of SF, not so much. The only hit on 'pipe locator' at my nearest rental yard lacks a description. And costs $150/day.

I did think about calling 811, the Before you Dig Number, and having them come out.

They might mark it for you, they might not.

Dad had paid PGE to extend the gas line 300 ft from the new meter at the property line, to the house. When I wanted to dig and install new water mains here 50 years later, I asked if PGE would mark the gas line for me. Nope. They told me anything beyond the meter was my problem. And they didn't keep any blueprints showing where they put the gas pipe.

I think that is a little deep for most metal detectors, but I am not an expert. The one time I tried to find some buried galvanized metal pipes on my property was a bust (probably due to a low quality metal detector), and they were only a foot down.

So I am assuming that the pipeline is a high pressure gas line, in which case it might be at least 3-5' down, and I am assuming that it is a metal pipeline (due to the pressure).

I am not sure that 811 would help much. They might roughly say from here to here is a no dig zone, and mark a 60' span at more or less the right place.

How much elevation change are you talking about? If you're cutting the trees in the orange circle could you then erect a tall pipe at each known pin, say a 20' piece of pvc, and see one from the other?
