They might mark it for you, they might not.

Dad had paid PGE to extend the gas line 300 ft from the new meter at the property line, to the house. When I wanted to dig and install new water mains here 50 years later, I asked if PGE would mark the gas line for me. Nope. They told me anything beyond the meter was my problem. And they didn't keep any blueprints showing where they put the gas pipe.

I hope you get a better response!
You're right. It's pretty iffy in rural areas what they will do.

Blueprints should not be necessary, as long as you can get the person doing the in the area of the pipe. In most jurisdictions, non-metallic gas lines are supposed to be buried with a tracer wire. You connect a special transmitter to the wire and use a receiver to detect the signal and locate the wire. When non-metallic lines are connected to metallic ones, the tracer line must be electrically continuous. The fact that it is generally not required for metallic gas lines would seem to be an indication that metallic lines are traceable without such a line. I'm not sure if they would use the same kind of tracing equipment, or just a metal detector.

I'm a bit surprised that PGE wouldn't just refer you to someone who could do the tracing, if they won't do it themselves.

My personal experience is I wouldn’t trust the pipe line marker. Say they have a 50 foot wide easement, they in theory put the pipe line in the middle, so 25 foot each way. Did they put the pipe line dead center in the easement? Is the marker actually over the pipe line? I just wouldn’t trust it.

I am a surveyor and briefly read the post someone put up of going out with 3 or 4 people and putting them on line. To be honest I didn’t understand it, but I’m sure I could figure it out.

Another possibility is to use something tall. I’ve used a 25 foot level rod over a corner to see rough line. Would 3 12 foot long 2x4’s hooked together be high enough? Paint the top one orange. Awkward as all get out to get that up in the air but might work.

I recently purchased a Trimble Catalyst. Trimble DA1 | Catalyst GNSS Systems | Trimble Geospatial
I was planning to use if for taking elevations for laser grading athletic fields. But, I don't think the elevation accuracy is good enough for what I do.

However, the horizontal accuracy is supposed to be within about 2 centimeters.

I'm still learning how to use it, and I'm not very comfortable with it yet.

It was about a $1000 investment, and there are a couple of subscriptions you have to buy to get the accuracy.

@EddieWalker this is probably not what you need, but I just wanted to throw it out here.

Go out on a foggy/misty/dusty night. Vertical laser on far pin. One person in the center with another vertical laser. Observer at near pin to direct center person into alignment with the far pin's laser. Maybe just a powerful flashlight making a visible vertical beam instead of a laser.

I just looked again on https://findlotsize.com/ to see how far it is between the two pins ( blue circles) and came up with 1,624 feet. Looking at the line, it looks almost exactly where I'm guessing it should go based on the Natural gas Pipeline on my neighbors property.

The distance that I want to go with the fence is 736 feet. This is from the blue circle to the left, to the purple circle.

So I'm trying to find the point along the line, just shy of half way.

There is no way to see through all the trees along the cliff. I do not believe there is a way to run a wire through the trees and pull it straight.

If you looked at the side profile of a spoon, and follow the shape of the bottom of the spoon, you can get an idea of what the ground is like. Except the spoon is bent down, so the tip of the spoon is a fair distance below the handle. The spoon part is in orange, but it goes all the way to the blue circle to the left. The area to the right of the orange circle, to the blue circle to the right is almost flat.

Is it possible to measure out x feet into to pipeline from the 2 blue circles, then find a straight line between them, then measure back x feet to the purple circle?

Yes, I could go 25 feet into my neighbors land and pull the wire there, then measure from the wire to my property line. That might work!!!!

How do you wind up barbed wire if you unroll an entire roll, plus another 300 feet or so?

If you need to be more accurate using this idea, pull a 3,4,5 triangle at each of the 2 blue points and another at the purple point.
to do this, you would have to have at least one known straight line to work from.
If you don’t have any known straight lines to work from, the 3,4,5 triangle should still get you to within a foot or so.
