Etching welds.

I have never done this before. When doing the testing of Roadhunter's new Everlast 120-volt Mig welder over on Welding Web. I was ask to do some etch testing. This was quite a learning experience for me:laughing:. I first tried naval jelly, then battery acid. The results were less than stellar!:thumbdown: So I ordered some phosphoric acid off ebay. It arrived yesterday. I cleaned up the fillet welds done by the Everlast 120-volt Mig run at max settings on 3/8-inch thick flatbar . And the one I did with my V350-Pro run at 29-volts, 224-amps.

First two pictures are the Everlast welds. First one is with the acid still on it. The second picture is with the acid wiped off. Not sure you can see it in this picture, the weld didn't even bite into the corner of the two plates:shocked:. Third picture is the weld made with the Lincoln V350-Pro,

Can you explain how this sort of thing is read? Do you look at the color difference where the last picture looks like a pie shaped penetration?

Yes that's how you read it. The V350-Pro really dug in. The Everlast 120-volt Mig didn't penetrate at all.:shocked:

I would love to, but Roadhunter demanded I ship his welder to him. As much as I tried to talk him into letting me keep it, he wouldn't hear of it! Kind of one way, don't you think? :laughing:

I did the same test with 6010, and 7018. These were etched with battery acid.:thumbdown:
Fist picture is 1/8" 6010.

The 6010 weld is dug in pretty good. I ran that with my Everlast PowerArc 300.

You Like that PA 300 don't ya . I have the baby brother to it a PA 140. It runs 1/8" 6011, 7014 and 7018 nice. I've been wanting to try some 5/32 with it but never got around to it. Super good welders for the price.

Oh yeah! She is a sweet machine:cool2:. I really like it with 6010. I think my Power Arc 200 has the edge with 7018 tho. Last picture is 7018 with the PA-300.

I redid the fillet welds done with 6010, and 7018 this morning with the phosphoric acid.
First picture is the 6010 weld with the acid still on.
Second pictures is the 6010 weld with the acid wiped off.
Third pictures is the 7018 weld with the acid still on.
Forth picture is the 7018 weld with the acid wiped off.

I don't know if it is "better" but it certainly gives a different piece of information. I think both have value in evaluation of a weld.

How are you cutting for these views? It almost looks like you cross cut them then put the flap wheel to it?

Used a port-a-band to cut them. Then an 80-grit sanding pad, 120-grit flap wheel then a 180-grit flap wheel.

Is that 3/8 metal ? You would think the 6010 would burn in deeper.
