JD140, started misfiring and did the usual things, new plugs and boots, fresh gas, new filters but no joy. But when blades are engaged it runs smooth.

Would adding an ounce or so of carb cleaner to gas be of any help? Don't have ability to do much more myself and shop is backed up this time of year.

May be a spot of water down by the main jet. Rev it up and jam the choke on a time or two. That can suck the water through

Are you sure that is is misfiring?

It would be strange that it would run good under load but not when the engine is not loaded. Are you confusing engine looping, i.e. engine speeding up and down with no input from the throttle?

What engine do you have?
