I am curious about the cam follower in the first picture (side view) Is the slot a continuous elongated "S"? It appears to continue down towards the bucket flap.

Maybe next time you are with your hoe and have a camera you could send us a couple more pics showing the cam follower and flap in various stages of motion, ie. with the pivot at various places on the follower and the relation of the flap when in that position.

Thanks again, this looks like a very viable design. The fact you are still using it after so many years is a testimony in itself.

I've attached a picture of the tractor and backhoe from the Minnesota History Society website. The picture looks like it was taken when the tractor and backhoe was initially introduced by Minneapolis Moline. I think this backhoe is rare enough to warrant a proper retirement in a Minnesota History Museum. In the not to near future, I plan on contacting the Minnesota Historical Society to see if they are interested in acquiring it. The old girl has worked hard and lived long. It is only fitting that her final resting spot be one in which she can be enjoyed by fans of old iron, and anyone who is fascinated by the workings of old machinery.
