I'm looking at new F150s, considering a V8 or V6 Eco Boost. Please post opinions regarding which you would prefer. I've driven both and both have sufficient power to suit me. Eco Boost costs about $1000 more but get a little better mileage.

The turbos on the V6 are helpful if you plan on doing any high-elevation driving.

I don't know what you plan on using the truck for but my ecoboost will pull up a pretty steep grade from a dead stop with a 10k trailer behind it with power to spare. I was really impressed.

I am in the same boat as I look at the 2015's. What few problems I've read about the ecoboost seem to have been fixed in 2013-2014.

I am leaning towards the ecoboost for torque and mpg reasons. But it's going to be hard to get rid of my paid for 2007 V10 F250 with only 56k miles on it. A lot depends on what changes the 2015 has.

What problems are you referencing? I am looking at 2013s to save a little money. We're the problems you mention fixed prior to 2013 model year production?

The only real problem I've read about is the CAC (intercooler) can get some moisture that puddles during certain conditions. When it's injested it can cause power loss and driveability problems.

I'm not the expert, but this was mostly on 2011-2012 models...and pretty rare on those.

There is a ton of stuff to google but remember that 99% of the posters had the issue and only represent less than 1% of ecoboosts sold.

Here is my theory on lots of those power loss issues. I have a '12 truck that will at times rip the tires loose if you are driving down the road at 45 and mash the pedal IN THE DRY on a bright sunny day. It will loose power and shudder. Each time it happens my reaction is wth until i look down and see the traction control flashing. As most of these issues are reported to happen in the rain under hard acceleration there is no way you are not spinning the rear wheels if you floor it in the rain. Full throttle in the wet will result in spin. While I'm sure a portion of these trucks do have an issue most of the problems are between the steering wheel and the seat.

Water was pooling in the intercooler from condensation, and then being injested into the motor, taking out the cats and sometimes destroying pistons. If it was cold enough for the condensate to freeze, there would be a considerable power loss and potential for the motor to go into limp home mode.

Has the pooling issue been addressed/fixed by Ford?

The intercoolers were replace with an updated model. It seems it was a cure for a lot of people but not everyone.

Get the Eco Boost. You will regret not getting it.

We have a 2011 4x4 Super Crew Eco Boost with 3.73 gears. Get 3.73 gears... my uncle has a 2013 with 3.55 gears and you can feel the difference.

Our 2011 has averaged 18.3 mpg since new on 87 octane.

I vote for the ecoboost. 2013 w 3.73, max payload and max tow.

Out of curiosity did Ford use the standard Duratec 35 and add turbos, or did it a build up the base block? I know they have the Duratec 37 that is the F150 base engine, but it was not "Eco'd". I thought the 37 was built for heavier use and I was surprised they did not "Eco" it. Anyone know if they will Eco the 5.0 some day?

I believe it is a new design from the ground up.

This is a dumb question but I've been reading this thread hoping to learn what "Eco Boost" means. I have searched it and it seems to mean an engine that is turbocharged and has electronic ignition for fuel delivery. Don't lot of engines do this and why is Eco Boost different or special?

It's not only turbo but directly injected like a diesel.

What makes it so special is 3.5L, mor usable power than any current V8 twice it's size while getting 20 or better economy.

Chris

Plus that torque curve.

Very interesting. Thank you.
Suppose that turbo and injector setup reduce engine life or is it too soon to tell?

Modern engines outlast the vehicles they are put in with just normal maintenance. I would not worry one bit about it.
