This post is for you guys that recently lost or had to put down a dog due to age or illness.
In my lifetime I've had several GSD's. My last dog had lost her hearing, arthritis had
set in and she was struggling just to walk. After 13+ years of being a constant companion,
a great family dog, extremely gentle with kids, very obedient ( I swear she could understand
English and compound sentences), I had to let her go. It was sickening. Still makes my eyes wet thinking about it.
It's been about 15 yrs. Didn't think I ever wanted another dog. I'll try to make this as short as possible.
We've been on the farm for the last 10+ yrs. No dog. Wife wants dog. Ok, IF we get another GSD.
Start the search. Found a "runt" GSD, last one left from the litter, almost to shy and not responding as I would have liked (too passive). Pup was 3 months old. All my other dogs were gotten at 8 or 9 wks old. I would have passed on this dog. Wife wants the dog, so....we got the dog. It took 2 weeks to get this dog out of her shell and acting "normal". Started training about the 2 day we got her. She's been great!
Now she's 5 1/2 months. She has brought us both a lot of joy just watching her be happy,
she will fetch ANYTHING you can throw, knows basic commands and is turning out to be a great farm dog. She loves the water and takes herself swimming in one of our ponds/tanks 2 or 3 times a day to beat the heat. Sometimes she'll just get in the water neck deep and kind of soak. Fetch in the water? She loves that. She has the run of my farm but mainly stays close to the house or in the front pasture. Never has run off. Comes when called...even when she's down at the tank taking a dip. Currently we let her inside a few hours in the heat of the day. However, she sleeps outside.
About 2 weeks ago she started to get her protective nature. People show up she doesn't know and she'll be barking and alert. Hug the visitor (yea, we hug folks here and there's nothing weird about it) and let her smell them and she's good. But, other dogs are now a small problem. We are keeping one of our sons dogs while they are on vacation. Our dog is not having it. Both dogs on lease, no problem. Both dogs lying within 3 ft of each other, no problem as long as we are sitting too. Trying our best to keep them apart unless supervised. Dogs get together accidentally....usually it's our pup that starts to attack. Anyway, I've never used a e-collar and don't particularly like the idea of one, but I bought one and it works. It will stop my dog immediately.....by just using the vibrate function.
Any ideas on making these two best buds? I know most dogs have a pecking order. Should I just let them work it out? They act like they purposely torment each other, then after awhile they get to it until I stop them. No one has gotten hurt, but I'm getting tired of it. I've got other things to do beside constantly baby sit these two.
