Father passed away several months ago. These were in one of the boxes. Appear to be metal. I see zero rust and "clank" if you hit them together.

In High School, he was in their marching band however, as best I know, played clarinet. He did not play (as best I know) any drums or percussion.

The two are all I have/found.

I'm scratching my head. Any ideas what they might be? Maybe six inches long and say, 3/4" diameter

According to Google AI:

The objects in the image are part of a Firegear Pro Series Steel Fire Pit Twig Set.

  • The set is designed for use in outdoor fire pits.
  • The pieces are made of steel and are shaped to resemble twigs.
  • The set can be used to add a decorative element to a fire pit or to help arrange logs or other fire media.
  • Firegear Outdoors specializes in outdoor fire products, including burner systems, fire features, and accessories.

Clave: I didn't know the name, but I wondered about them being used to clang together. Tried it, they don't sound very musical and it's not terribly loud. If it was in a marching band, I'd think other items might make more noise

Dad lived in Hilton Head, so being boxed (verses in a firepit which he didn't have) might make some sense. He was born/raised Findlay, Ohio so he came from cold weather.

Looks to me like there is a seam on them. I'm guessing a casting seam? They weren't welded together. If I recall, there was a "D" embossed on one side of them. No other markings that I saw.

I've put them back into the box to look at later along with some of the family pictures (his as child), pictures of his frat house that in 1990 (??) burned down and he became instrumental in rebuilding (he was a developer for his whole life). Clippings of Kennedy assination, picture of him with John Glenn (astronaut), some other interesting stuff.

Finding these in there suggested to me they were more than just two items he bought at the corner trinket store but never in my life, have I seen them.
