This post is for you guys that recently lost or had to put down a dog due to age or illness.
In my lifetime I've had several GSD's. My last dog had lost her hearing, arthritis had
set in and she was struggling just to walk. After 13+ years of being a constant companion,
a great family dog, extremely gentle with kids, very obedient ( I swear she could understand
English and compound sentences), I had to let her go. It was sickening. Still makes my eyes wet thinking about it.
It's been about 15 yrs. Didn't think I ever wanted another dog. I'll try to make this as short as possible.
We've been on the farm for the last 10+ yrs. No dog. Wife wants dog. Ok, IF we get another GSD.

Start the search. Found a "runt" GSD, last one left from the litter, almost to shy and not responding as I would have liked (too passive). Pup was 3 months old. All my other dogs were gotten at 8 or 9 wks old. I would have passed on this dog. Wife wants the dog, so....we got the dog. It took 2 weeks to get this dog out of her shell and acting "normal". Started training about the 2 day we got her. She's been great!

Now she's 5 1/2 months. She has brought us both a lot of joy just watching her be happy,
she will fetch ANYTHING you can throw, knows basic commands and is turning out to be a great farm dog. She loves the water and takes herself swimming in one of our ponds/tanks 2 or 3 times a day to beat the heat. Sometimes she'll just get in the water neck deep and kind of soak. Fetch in the water? She loves that. She has the run of my farm but mainly stays close to the house or in the front pasture. Never has run off. Comes when called...even when she's down at the tank taking a dip. Currently we let her inside a few hours in the heat of the day. However, she sleeps outside.

About 2 weeks ago she started to get her protective nature. People show up she doesn't know and she'll be barking and alert. Hug the visitor (yea, we hug folks here and there's nothing weird about it) and let her smell them and she's good. But, other dogs are now a small problem. We are keeping one of our sons dogs while they are on vacation. Our dog is not having it. Both dogs on lease, no problem. Both dogs lying within 3 ft of each other, no problem as long as we are sitting too. Trying our best to keep them apart unless supervised. Dogs get together accidentally....usually it's our pup that starts to attack. Anyway, I've never used a e-collar and don't particularly like the idea of one, but I bought one and it works. It will stop my dog immediately.....by just using the vibrate function.

Any ideas on making these two best buds? I know most dogs have a pecking order. Should I just let them work it out? They act like they purposely torment each other, then after awhile they get to it until I stop them. No one has gotten hurt, but I'm getting tired of it. I've got other things to do beside constantly baby sit these two.

I am no dog whisper by any means, but here is my experience.

I have one dog that is a a$$ hole,(the yellow one in my previous post) he wasn't properly socialize and It took him a long time to get him to tolerate the brown one when we got her...He is not mean but he didn't want nothing to do with her, the way I got them better was to play with them with multiple object but it still took time, I would make sure each dog were more interested in the objects then in each other and not the same object so I would always have a back up object hidden and I play fetch with each dog independently but at the same time and give them command to show them you are in control and your focus to me and not to each other ... some dogs are not compatible (one wants to play and the other one doesn't)... but the odd thing is when we are not there and we drop him at the kennel the lady let all the dogs play together a few times a day (unless they are known to be very aggressive) and he his perfectly fine never had a Issue with him ... Why? because we are not there ... sometime the worse you can do is being there. Most likely your dog is trying to protect you or is jealous. With my dog confine space and people definitely make it worse one seek attention he gets it and the other get jealous, push for attention and sh#t hits the fan.

We had no problem with him in regards with our new GSD he actually like her a lot more then the brown lab when she was little but he still doesn't want to play with her if she try he will show his K9, if that doesn't work he will fake snap at her. The brown one was a lot more pushy she had no fear lol... The odd time he will play with the other two outside but never inside a house.

Rocky:
Wife and I have played fetch with each dog independently, but within 30yd of
each other. They still give each other the evil eye......
I'll try to do the independent but at the same time fetch game.
You may be right, keep the human factor out of it.
These dogs have to get along at some point, because my other kids have dogs
too and at certain times all the dogs, adults & gkids are here. So the "process" has
to continue.

If they can't stand each other to begin with then no don't introduce ''toys'' ... two male ? or female-male ? what is the demographic?

When I am with my yellow dog and other dogs that I don't know there is no playing because he his too selfish and he will get into it guarantee ... but once they can stand each other that's how I get them to play together and show them I am in control even if there is two of ya but they could be around each other without having a fight to begin with.

Redirection is a powerful tool use it.
Positive reinforcement when they do the right thing.
Time and patience.

Well, this morning the wife was mowing. Our dog was outside watching from the porch. I let the other dog out, they stared at each other from about 15' apart, and before I could even take 2 steps they were going at it. I just threw my hands up and said I hope y'all can work it out because I'm done. They had 2 quick
spats. I walked away to work in my shop and left them standing there.
Both dogs just wandered the property, came at different times to visit me while I was working. They
didn't really hang out together but progress is progress.
Results? After a fairly peaceful trip to the pond with both dogs in late afternoon heat, they actually laid
out within 3' of each other back at the house. Have they reached a truce?
Both outside eating dinner right now. no problems so far. (fingers crossed).
Btw, both dogs are female. Mine is a little over 5 months, my sons dog is about 6 or7yo. Both are about
the same size right now.
They just need to tolerate each other.

For those who didn't know, Duke was the name of the dog John Wayne, actual name Marion Michael Morrison, had when he was a boy. And that is where he got the nickname Duke.

200 acres of ground to look for birds, it hasn't rained in forever and she finds the only black dirt mud puddle on high ground. Even better, look at that grin over how proud she was to find it. Her legs and underbelly are/were 100% white.

Last night was one of the first times we ate on our new back deck. Breakfast for dinner you could say.

At the beginning of the year, we had 5 dogs (last year 6 dogs) and we're down to two now.

Rough year in 2024 for those dreaded last vet visits, but these two still put a smile on on our face LOL

Then later on, the cat decided to come from out back and join us LOL

I had 7 flea motels at one time (just what I called them), all from the same litter (long story), as such lost them all in aboot a year.
I would like to get another mut or 2 but I haven't gotten over the last batch.
Used to be annoying with them begging for food at the table but I miss it now.

The mutts can be a pain, expensive and break your heart (when the pass) but I just can't live without a few around.

Yesterday the temps were near normal and a good day to be outside, for a change. I'll just crash over here. I've had a full day of patrolling the yard, keep squirrels chased off, keeping check on my people and what they are doing (is it something they need me to supervise). It's just hard work, somebody has to do it and I'll be ready to do it again... tomorrow. :ROFLMAO:
