Well it could be a lot of things, some softners are demand actuated, and some are timed actuated. In the demand actuated, the amount of water you use determines how often the regen process is started. In the timed, models the timer determines how often the regen process is started, regardless of water usage. It is possible your water use habits have changed, or the water hardness has changed, a test for that might be helpful. And yes the media can become coated to the point that a regen does not fully clean it with the ion exchange. Yes the media can be replaced. We called our water softner pro. and he changed the media, (about 16 years old), reset the brine injection amount lower, ( I had turned it up over the years) and now we use less salt and have soft water. I have a Fleck 5900 demand type. One other thing that may have helped is we had to replace the well pump and piping, and had the pump lowered in the water table deeper, it seems that the water has less iron in it than it did before, and while we prefilter still some iron comes thru and this has got to help clog up the resin bed media. We also add a few ounces of a liquid provided by the softner company, I believe it is potassium permanganate to the brine well every month.

Not sure but I believe there are required maintenance proceedures as well as media changes to keep one working properly.

In my area the water hardness seems to fluctuate throughout the year. It is possible your water is harder than when you first installed your softener.

Good Mornin Gary,
Its possible depending on the type of system that you have.

I have the Signature Series system at my Ct home. I have two cannisters that look like torpedoes, and a 35 gal brine tank that is where I pour my salt tabs into with water.

If your system is similar, you may have to have someone replace the calcite in the long cannisters. That usually needs to be done once a year. Without that, your water wont be soft as you said it was when the system was working properly...

its probly 13 yrs old..when the water is soft its fine....it just seems to run out of soft water per say...soon as it regens its fine

never cleaned the media ....i was thinking about changing the meter adj..its a demand unit so it goes by gallong..it think its at 20 k right now? not sure if thats right tho...but its always been that way

i do think it could be since weve had a lot of rain thi sumeer might have something to do with it. gonna look into resetting the gallonage and make sure the little thing that spins around inside is woking right. its using salt...

The Culligan repair man had to replace something in mine about 3 years ago. I think he called it the mother board but I'm not sure on that. But something electrical was replaced. It ran for another year and a half before crashing again. Then we replaced just the electrical part. The resin tank and salt bowl are the original from 1998.

It could be time to replace your resin. 13 years isn't uncommon, but if I recall correctly, 10 years is a good interval to replace the resin. It's a lot cheaper than replacing the whole system. Could be a lot of things. You can possibly limp along for a while by reducing the cycle time and increasing the frequency. Same salt usage, same amount of soft water. Just more frequent re-gen.
