Well it could be a lot of things, some softners are demand actuated, and some are timed actuated. In the demand actuated, the amount of water you use determines how often the regen process is started. In the timed, models the timer determines how often the regen process is started, regardless of water usage. It is possible your water use habits have changed, or the water hardness has changed, a test for that might be helpful. And yes the media can become coated to the point that a regen does not fully clean it with the ion exchange. Yes the media can be replaced. We called our water softner pro. and he changed the media, (about 16 years old), reset the brine injection amount lower, ( I had turned it up over the years) and now we use less salt and have soft water. I have a Fleck 5900 demand type. One other thing that may have helped is we had to replace the well pump and piping, and had the pump lowered in the water table deeper, it seems that the water has less iron in it than it did before, and while we prefilter still some iron comes thru and this has got to help clog up the resin bed media. We also add a few ounces of a liquid provided by the softner company, I believe it is potassium permanganate to the brine well every month.seems like mine doesnt make soft water for as long as it used to..like it runs out of soft water before it regens..

its probly 13 yrs old..when the water is soft its fine....it just seems to run out of soft water per say...soon as it regens its fine
never cleaned the media ....i was thinking about changing the meter adj..its a demand unit so it goes by gallong..it think its at 20 k right now? not sure if thats right tho...but its always been that way
i do think it could be since weve had a lot of rain thi sumeer might have something to do with it. gonna look into resetting the gallonage and make sure the little thing that spins around inside is woking right. its using salt...
