Do they go by the weight on the trailer axels or the axels plus hitch?

Great question which I can’t answer and have received conflicting info depending on who I asked... seems the DOT guys are specialized much more so than local low enforcement and highway patrol.

Previous owner said scales under trailer tires which could mean 1000 pounds on hitch being 10% of 10k trailer rating.

What axles does the PJ have. 5K or 7K? 12K indicates potentially 6K axles but they don't seem too common and are 6 lug hubs just like 5K axles.

Axles are 6k and I believe 8 lug...

Trailer is at ranch and regularly earning its keep...

At first I didnt particularly like the tilt up ramps but find using to add a margin of safety.

Forgot I had this picture of PJ with 8 lug and my 9000+ pound service van which has been scaled as much as 9200 pounds with mods to springs

I like the identical ramps on my trailer. The downside is they limit the length but they are a lot easier to use than the stow underneath kind. They also support the back of the trailer without the need for additional blocks or jack stands. My backhoe boom fits between them so the length isn’t a problem for me.

The built in support is what I value having seen a contractor load a tractor and lifting the rear wheel off the ground losing braking as the rig took off.

Every year the ramps come off to make the High School Homecoming Float... 6 years now.

I have the same.
The ramp system is the most practical/simple design.

If I didn't know any different I would say with certainty that those are 7K axles. Dual 7K are routinely de-rated in CA to 9900 / sub 10K. Not sure why the 12k original rating claim, maybe that was just an errant claim by the PO? Nice trailer and looks like you put it to many good uses. I do miss my 18' sometimes!

They probably are with possibly lighter springs. 6k axels usually aren’t 8 lug.
