A somewhat related response to this thread... 6 months ago I discovered a dead, young, possum in the horse trough. To prevent this happening in the future I installed a 'scramble net' on the inside of the trough and have been 'corpse free' ever since.
I used a bit of plastic roof gutter mesh, then screwed it to the rim.
PS: Please excuse the condition of the water. I was having trouble with the bore (well) water at that time. It's been resolved and the horses have clean, clear water to drink.

I always leave the ladder inside my pool ever since I found out squirrels can't tread water indefinately.

Same here. Outside ladder comes off when we finish swimming, inside ladder stays in till the pool is shutdown in the fall.I do the same for people and myself.
