Well, we can always tell when we're close to Christmas.

These fellas come down the hill and feast on the high grass, and later enjoy the crabapples in the yard. They do a bit of jousting which you can hear even after the sun goes down.

If you haven't guessed yet, they're doin' all this to get in shape for the soon upcoming "Big Flight"... Count 'em in the first pic to see if I'm lyin'!!! :p Musta' been drawn by the lights (see night picture).
[Sorry about the light reflections; these were taken through the back door and the side window!]

Yep this one was 11 pointer. We picked him up on the game camera, down near the pond, but it was normally around 4 AM every morning, heck he was standing nearly beneath the tree stand. Just glad that he made it through the bow, black power and riffle season. There is always next hear!

I didnt think a coyote could take down a deer of this size.

I'm not trying to start anything, but these pictures have been going around awhile. I've seen them attributed to friends, cousins, and neighbors everywhere from Mississippi, Texas, and now Ohio. Where ever they're from and whoever took them doesn't really matter I guess, it does teach a good lesson on predator vs. prey. I think he was injured for a while and those coyotes just took advantage.

predators only attack the old, sick and weak, after they run them to make them old and weak. Total BS about only old weak and sick

The last Horned Toad I saw was this one in 2004. They were more common 60 years ago.

Yes that 10 point buck was in his prime and in the velvet in August.. No old and weak just prey. What you see here is the harsh reality of the way Nature and the world works.

Yup, critters in the real world are ruthless. Here they are line dancing instead of doing their jobs. :)

Note there is one of the four that was too shy to dance in public.

I'm hoping they're not declining too much. Did you know that they can actually shoot a stream of blood out of their eye! I'll bet there's a YouTube of it somewhere. Now that sounds like sci-fi!

So, here's the latest interesting critter that was unique and novel to us on our property this weekend. I sent photos to the local raptor society, and they confirmed it as a mature red-tailed hawk. It was surprisingly large. That's a flicker in his talons (we have a bunch of flickers here, some nesting in a box, and some roosting under the eaves of our log home).

We heard the flicker making a lot of noise just before I stepped outside, and that's when I saw this fella. More flicker feathers & down were in the driveway, so I'm guessing the hawk caught him right there.

Awesome pictures! I've never seen a hawk that close before. I feel bad for the flicker though...seems like it wasn't his day.

This certainly IS awesome - catching him with his prey like that! Wow, thanks for sharing!

Boone, why do you call them Osceola Turkeys? Is that just the location where they are found or some physical characteristic? Just curious. . . Your green grass sure looks inviting. Green is what I miss most in winter.
