I bought this mower the guy said it was a john deere.
Looked at photos on the internet and Alamo said it was a mott KB48.

I had it sand blasted painted, figure out the pulley size to run on my massey gc2300 540 rpm.

Tryed it out today runs backwards. Needs pto to run counterclockwise.

What can I do now? any replacement gear boxs?
Please help
thanks
Al

If the blades are directional turn them around.

There is some kind of guard on the front.
When you mow driving forward it just lays the grass over.
It was really close to ground so I removed it.

That's when I discovered the grass shooting out toward the tractor.

I would like to drive the tractor forward and grass come out the back.
Any help in solving this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Al

Sounds like it's turning the right way then. The blades throwing grass forward means it keeps carries the clippings along with it a ways, mulching it up. Pit the guards back on, but tilt the whole unit back some so they don't drag the ground. You want a gap so they don't lay the grass down quite so much.

Hello Al,

Do you have any idea whether there was a snubber pulley tensioner on this mower?

Was the rear roller still on the machine when you bought it?

The front discharge is fine, you just need to reinstall the guard.

If you want a new gear box check with the folks at Flailmaster.

I never owned a flail mower before.
I thought they would rotate like my howard rotovator.
And discharge the grass out the back where the roller is.

The Mott KB48 book didn't show that piece in the front.
It would seem that the the grass/rock would get kicked up and thrown right at your back while you are driving.

If it is normally run with it off I will do that.

Hello Al,

You do not want to run with the
guard off as it ment to be there for you.

I will take new pictures of machine and place guard back on.

I will adjust height so guard isn't close to ground.
I will also try to answer all the questions

thank you all for your help

I have a 5' Mott flail mower also and will look at mine today and post up some info.

My pto runs counterclockwise, the output end of the gear box runs counterclockwise, the flail roller runs counterclockwise thus putting cuttings out the backend of the mower.

Hello Dennis,

when you are referring to a counter clockwise rotation; I must assume you are standing at the right side of the mower and the rotor is spinning counterclockwise which is the proper way for most flail mowers with a rear discharge carrying the cuttings up and over the rotor and back down to the ground correct?

I'm standing at the left side of the mower looking across the mower.

Hello Dennis,

Your mower is fine the way it is as long as you keep the guard on it as it will mow just fine.

Welcome to the Flail Mower Nation.

I don't know how to navigate this site and reply to each person.

I put the guard back on and moved to up so it is not close to the ground.
Started to mow good then stop belt is slipping/ smoking

The spring is brand new but it does not feel like a very strong spring.

had a fill nut for gear box put on it and home made lift chains.
part number of guard is 700384.( could see it in marker)
attached are photos, is it a KB48 see how pulleys are on the left hand side facing the tractor compared to going to the right.

Hello Al,

Your biggest problem with the flail mower is the
fact that the flail mower does not have any skids
and that is why it has trouble mowing and you have
to have them.

The flail mower must be riding on the skids and
rear roller both in order for the flail motor rotor
to come up to speed to mow properly.

Apparently someone removed the skids and did
not replace them. Please check with flailmaster
to see if they have skids that will fit if you cannot
have them fabricated locally.

Edit: Al the two bolts at very bottom edge of the side
plate in the picture you have provided are where the
skid shoes should be mounted most likely and someone
removed them unfortunately.

Do you have any photos of these skids and where they are placed.
The photos in the KB48 mower manual didn't show anything on the mower.

Thanks

When cutting with a properly set up flail, my skids never touch the ground. It rides only on the roller. The only time they touch anything is when the unit is unhooked sitting on its pallet. The presence of the skids has no effect on the rotor's speed. I view them as completely unnecessary. In fact the manufacturer of my flail sells them without the skids and only offers the skids as an option. What the heck are you talking about?

In this picture you can see how my flail rides. Please notice the skids are hanging uselessly on the sides:

Hello Al,

I do not have any pictures of the KB48 flail mower. I suppose its entirely possible that this flailmower with the forward discharge onloy rides one the rear roller. The skids are primarly to prevent gouging by the mowers side weldments in the ground while turning and to avoid nose diving the rotor into the turf by dropping in hole while mowing.

You may be fine with setting the cutting height with the rear hitch and locking the needle valve in place with the top link postioned exactly at the same vertical point the lower link arms are when attached to the mower lower link attachment points.

Or dropping the 3pt lift all the way down as I do, and tilting the unit back onto its rear roller by extending the top link.
