Ive burned through 3 little two stroke augers and im getting tired of fiddling with teeny carburetors. My kubota has auxiliary hrdraulics front and back, and the soil at my place has virtually zero rock. Why couldnt I make a simple bracket to go on my qc backhoe bucket and power my existing auger bits directly with a hydraulic motor of some sort? My hydraulic output for the backhoe thumb has to be at least as powerful as a 50cc two stroke and I'm not setting power poles, just need an 8" auger to spin 3' or so in sandy soil with the occasional vein of caliche or chalky sandstone.

Could a hydraulic pump be modified for this job, like, say a power steering pump? Some other junkyard option?

Anybody tried this?

There are lots of different manufactures selling SSQA hydraulic augers.
Or a person could use a 3 point auger and make up a swiling self leveling mount and add a hydraulic drive motor to it.
Such as these;

The larger the cubic inches of the hydraulic moter the more torque and also the more GPM to reach max speed.

I made one from an auction purchased hydraulic motor, frogged up an adapter to put my augers on, and bolted it up to a JD Q.A. plate (Amazon) on one of my loader arms. Runs off the curl side of the loader control stick. Hoses were the highest cost. Plus now I can see exactly where the hole is going to be and no longer have the owl neck needed to run a rear mounted PHD. Best part of it is drilling replacement holes for broken posts. The loader arm pushes the wire fence back and away from the new hole. The motor is mounted in a 'cage that's gimballed using an old ujoint set so it's always pointed towards the center of the flat earth. All on its own...

Why would a 3pt auger not work? Some folks convert 3pt augers to hydraulics but they do not handle the down pressure well.

Other than that I would suggest watching Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. I picked up my McMillen 1850 for $500. Local dealer hand a Danuser auger bit for $200 so I am $700 into it.

A third option would be to try a chinese auger drives that they sell for the small excavators. I see them advertised on Facebook for the $600 range with an auger.

I picked up the mini excavator Chinese auger brand new from a local auction. It came with three augers (9, 12, 16 inches). Welded it to a ssqa plate and got some fittings for quick disconnects. I'm $225 bucks all in. Used it on my Branson with some success. It turns the auger reasonably fast, and digs very well, even in hard clay, until you hit a decent sized rock where it stalls. Much easier to mount and use than my 3 point!

Thanks for posting that. Is the shaft on the hydraulic drive round or hex, also what is the diameter? I am curious as I have been shopping for bits and keep seeing these. I contemplated going this way but ran into a deal on a McMillen that I could not pass up.
