Get a R410 unit

I'll second getting the R-410A unit:p If the guy is an American Standard dealer, he should be offering that as your first choice.

Considering the fact that your duct work is up in age, I think it would be a waste of money to go over 14 SEER. Even with new ductwork installed (MORE money), payback from 14 to 16 SEER may take 12 to 20 years to see.

I would however seriously consider spending some extra money on a varaible speed system with a Honeywell IAQ t-stat, using the IAQ equipment interface moduel to work the variable speed and system to help with humidity control, as well as temperature.

I have an ammana heat pump in my home, it was installed prior to 1990 and the only trouble that I have had out of it is when it was installed it was installed in under the eave of the house where water run off from the house went in it and froze up the coils and that stalled the fan and the fan motor burned up. Also there was two copper lines that touched each other and it rubbed a hole on one and I had to have that repaired. Other than that I have had absolutly no other problems with it ,and those problems wasn't the fault of the heat pump but was instead the fault of the installer. I don't know if Ammanna still is in business or not, but there is no deallers in my immediate area that I know of now, but should my heat pump go out I would definatly check into getting another one. With close to twenty years of service and still going strong I feel it has already been a good one.
