Case d40
Early 2000 D40 seldom starts on the first, second, third, etc key turn. I’ve pulled the starter and grounded it to the frame and it throws and spins solid every time. My best guess is a rusty flywheel here in the southern humidity prevents the starter from spinning the flywheel and starting. What is my easiest solution? I don’t know how to get to the flywheel to knock the rust off? Don’t think I can spray anything in there correct?

I live in the south and I have never witnessed this. I guess it’s a first time for everything. My money would be on the starter or bentix. If not some bad places on the fly wheel. I’ve heard engines stop at the same place every time. Good luck

Doesn’t make sense to me either but all I can come up with. It’s a new starter that when disconnected works fine everytime through the tractor wiring. It’s getting juice and engaging right just doesn’t turn over the flywheel.

What about a high resistance connection on the battery, ground, or starter cables? That could account for it not turning the engine over when installed and spinning the starter when not installed under load.

Maybe if you describe the symptoms more accurately it would help. "Seldom starts on first, second, third start" What does that mean? Starter spins but the engine doesn't? Starter does nothing? Something clicks but nothing happens? Details matter.

I think those are the same as the New Holland TC series tractors and they are know to get corrosion inside the battery cables.

Cleaning the clamps does NOT fix the internal corrosion issue only replacing the cables does.

If you look on the New Holland sub forums you will see multiple threads on this issue.

I hear the starter engage with the flywheel with the click but nothing turns over. I assume the starter is trying to turn over since I hear it click. I can keep on trying and trying and trying and then suddenly it will fire right up.

Interesting. I've replaced the negative but not positive cable. Changed the end but not the cable and it is old and been outside.
