Why don't you try the basic test? Remove the signal wire from the starter. Put a short jumper wire on the spade and "jump" that to battery positive. Do that a few times. Do you get the same result as with starting (or attempting to start) with the key? If yes, then you have a starter, battery, cable, or related problem. On the other hand, if the starter engages and cranks the engine first time every time, the problem is with the incoming signal circuit.
