CASE 955XL starter problems

Hi,

I have had this model for 30 years with no problem. She is original and works well. Baling and topping.
Lately the starter would not engage despite a clicking when the key is turned.
Operaing the clutch pedal would sometimes work.
I fitted a new starter complete and it made no difference. Silly me.
I then sprayed lubricant on the small switch behind the dash near the clutch pedal. In an impossible position.
It then worked sometimes. I think there is another relay switch somewhere-but where?
AFter a 2 month lay up I tried a start and the starter connected but would not disconnect and kept turning until the battery flattened. 2 minutes. Now removed battery lead and chatging battery.I note another post says there is a relay under a floor panel. I have the maintenance and operating handbook with circuit diagrams but they do not give locations.
Any ideas please?

Can you post the circuit diagrams.
This would help establish how many safety switches and relays are between the ignition key and the starter..

Hi,
I have the circuit diagram and can follow. I need to know where the relays are sited. One on the dash is functioning. There is a starter safety relay which I cannot locate or identify. There is no access panel under the floor mat.

What is clicking when you turn the key, Is it the starter solenoid or something else and if it is something else can you tell where the sound is originating from?
What I wanted to be able to do with the diagram was to get a sense if there was a control doing multiple safety functions as I have seen on some Kubota zero turn mowers where the relay function(s) are incorporated within that master control which gets signals from multiple safety switches and also to be able to see wire colors and using these colors being able to suggest which wires to follow to locate the problem part.
When the tractor was working OK, I am assuming from your initial comments, that there may have been more than one safety item besides the clutch switch such as the pto engaging lever or was there just the clutch pedal safety switch which did not handle the current from the ignition switch but rather triggered a relay which let current pass through to the starter solenoid.

Hi Dave,

Sorted thanks. It was the NEW starter solenoid failing to disconnect. The relay I asked about is under the dash fuse box.
Starter has been returned to supplier. I have a spare which works a treat.

Glad to hear it turned out to be the new starter.
Quality has gone down hill as most are now of Chinese origin
