Tractor hard to start in cold

Both of my Deere backhoes would readily start in the cold without block heaters. Cranking speed is importance though. If they aren’t turning fast I’d start troubleshooting there. Since it turns fine in warm the starter mad cables are probably fine. My guess is the battery is on its way out.

Installing/utilizing hyd pump destroking screw/valve or rapidly moving steering wheel side while engaging starter will help JD tractors with closed-center hyd system start easier

With a good quality battery maintainer that won't overcharge your battery it's amazing! We live off grid and I have to manage and scrutinize every load because we have to make our power from a generator in low light season. Did you know that if you hook up and leave good quality maintainer running that the electric consumption to keep the battery up is not detectable overall? Even for two rigs with separate chargers?

Yesterday I went out to to plug in the old B7100 and the old ATV as I do periodically. The green light was on, yellow (charging) light was off. I never disconnected them from a month or two ago. Oops. The batteries are up and the maintenance charge is almost minimal at most. I can see the power draw when I first connect them. But if I leave them running its indistinguishable.

And when ya have to start the rig with a topped off battery, esp diesel, oh boy, what a difference. The only down side is extension cords which I hate.

Any starter that is not supplied with adequate starting amperage, regardless of ambient temperature, is destined for a shortened lifespan.
While cranking battery voltage might drop to 10.5V, but if supplied amperage is up to specs. the starter will perform as designed for its normal lifespan.
