Case 580e options

Looking to buy a case 580 of C model or newer and two 580Es have come up

First is 2wd non extendahoe 6k hours owned by a heavy equipment mechanic second owner. All glass intact and not rusted away $11k

Second is 4WD extendahoe with 9k hours but supposedly the engine was rebuilt (sounds healthy) and has new paint (saw photos prior to painting) All glass intact as well. Seller openly stated they buy and flip equipment.
$13k

My property is in the mountains so obviously isnt flat and has hills.

I have an old 2WD Case 580C. It was worn out when I got it twenty years ago and it's still worn out. But you can't believe how much work a heavy Case will do...and keep doing..and keep doing. Rebuilt engine before I got it and zero problems there.

Assuming the engine and hydro pump are good, I would get the 4WD. I also think it would be worth it to have a good heavy equipment mechanic go with you and test it and look for any issues that will need repair. Worth it (and get his name for future work...)

Be prepared for hydraulic hose replacements and cylinder seal rebuilds. Not really hard to do on a farm - just replaced the seals in the boom cylinders on mine over the weekend working with my mechanic. Rebuilt and back on the machine in less than an hour. Aftermarket parts are available at reasonable prices, but if you use a Case dealer, the costs of parts and labor will be very expensive.

4wd extendahoe would be my choice. Digging depth of 170 inches on std hoe, 219 on extendahoe means a little less repositioning when trenching/digging

Extendahoe is very valuable. I know others who did not get that and regret it.

Agree on the 4wd, but don't let the paint fool you. A paint job covers a multitude of sins. As said, take a good equipment mechanic with you.
Case 580E and prior are notorious for leaking cylinders, but they are easy and cheap to rebuild.
Also, examine the brakes, being you are in the mountains. 580E's had two different braking systems. Both are dry disc systems, which is a big upgrade from prior 580s other than late 508D's, but one utilizes a regular brake fluid system while the later use hydraulic oil for their brake hydraulics. The latter has more expensive slave cylinders and is serial number 16270319 and after.

Reasonable anymore is what you are willing to pay. IMO, that’s reasonable for a full size tlb. I would probably do a compression check to see how fresh that motor may be. I’d look very closely at the condition of all the hoses too (for counter offer leverage) I’d also check for slop in the shuttle shifter linkage. Throttle down before using the shuttle. The front end likes to hop a little

both sold prior to inspection due to distance and time restraints. Now looking at a 480e 2wd standard hoe 3200hrs spent life as a grave digger at a cemetery.

I tend to disagree on the 580K or L for your kind of use as the newer you get past E series, the more high tech it gets. As far as parts go, aftermarket and used markets have a lot. Drivetrain parts are pretty plentiful

I have a 580D/E 2nd, extendable that I’m selling as I am done with it. D/E as it was re- engined with a low hours Cummins BT-4 by the prior owner. The downside to the D model, in my opinion, is the crappy gauge panel on a circuit board-impossible to replace as even the used ones I was able to find had issues with functionality. Built my own gauge panel instead.

I have replaced hoses and cylinder seals on an excessive leakage basis-mostly because many of the hoses are long and expensive as well as being challenging to replace.

I wish mine was 4wd but the cost difference was too significant for what my needs were.

As I price comparison, I’m asking 12k and would likely accept 10k. Had about 30 responses on Marketplace so far-2 serious enough to come look at it-many lowballs or trades.

I’m sure it will sell to somebody like me who is developing land and needs a stout but low cost of ownership machine.

I have the ability as a mechanic by trade to replace just about everything on a 480E myself

Case may not stock many of the parts however I’ve had very little trouble sourcing most of the parts I’ve needed either through the aftermarket or the used market. One of the advantages of the re-engining of my D model with the BT- ( besides the fact that it is darn near bulletproof) is the availability of parts for it.

bought the 480e with 3700 hrs on it, very tight machine just needs fluids changed to begin a baseline maintenance log during my ownership
