I'm all for making things right, but since you don't have the check numbers I would definitely not write out new checks. At best tell them they will have to wait a few months till you can figure out what 2 check numbers they are. You would then need to ask your bank if there are 2 and only 2 checks that are not cashed from the sequences you have issued. I have to agree with the others also that it sounds crazy to write out checks from multiple check books at a time and not have cc, nor fill out a register. You really are putting yourself at huge risk. If someone stole a check from one of your many books, you have NO way to know. Would you even notice a charge of $500 from your bank? You don't see who cashed your checks on your bank statements, right?

No I would not notice if someone cashed a check out of my book that I did not write. ....My wife does it on a regular basis...I haven't actually balanced a check book since sometime back in 1984.

I'm sure getting a sneaky feeling that this whole thread is a joke. Surely no one actually does as you claim to do. And it's not even April Fools day.

Nope.. I actually got a call from some agency in California this morning that said they are representing UPS and I told them the same as I have said here. The guy was a complete dick and I basically said if you can't tell me the check # than I can't help you. He got all pissy and said just write another one less a stop payment fee... Duh... I then told him my bank will honor a check up to 360 days after its date and to call me next year. Had he not been such a jackhole at first, I would have been more helpful

Good for you!! Thumbs up!

A call from someone representing UPS? Now it is starting to sound like someone is Phishing. I would tell them you paid in full at time of delivery. Anything that they lost after you fulfilled the COD requirements is on them.

I have not either. I do have carbon behind all my checks though. I just quick scan my balance every month. Have not balanced anything since early 90's

Why is this your problem ?
You have proof you paid the driver by cheque.
Now shouldn,t the missing cheques be their problem ?

/ Carrier lost my checks #31
They will harass you and try and get you to pay again. Stand your ground, make sure you make copies of the receipts and keep them safe. You might need them again and again as they try and wear you down.

I'm sure this is not a scam. In the very beginning, my vendor called and asked me if I paid for the shipment because he did not get a check for it from UPS. I told him I was certain I did but would look for the check amount in my next statement. I also called my local UPS terminal to have them look into it, they said they have record of the driver recording accepting and turning in the check, but it was lost somewhere after that, between the terminal and where ever they go to be sent to the original shipper. My vendors have been paid by UPS ( directly ) so I'm in fine standing with them. I also like my UPS driver and would not want him to get in any trouble for this. I spoke to him about it and he said he was in the clear because he did everything he was supposed to. I then asked he enters check #s into his little brown scanner for cod's.. He said he did. .. So why UPS can't just dig the info out of that device.. I have no idea. And how this happened twice in 3 weeks.. Another mystery.

While some have talked about the driver a good bit there is a time probably a single person is handling the money or checks by them self or they are moving through a system on their on such as vac tube systems...no idea what UPS may use but it could be there is a problem in either a mechanical issue or a person with UPS or some company they contract with and they be just errors or they are stealing from UPS. Even with the vendor talking with you still could be a scam but not by driver but within the UPS money handling people.

I am understanding a check is only valid for 6 months per I think banking regulations.

It's their fault, stand your ground.

I would suggest you contact your bank and set up Internet banking. I can't imagine they wouldn't have it. With this, you can see all check and debit card transactions and print checks that have posted to your accounts. It's a time saver and ends issues that you are experiencing.

By the way, your bank should have given you the check numbers you inquired about given the information presented to them. Sounds like they forgot who the customer is....

As I read it, he said 'I want to stop a check that hasn't been cashed yet, but I don't know the check #'
They replied 'sorry, we can't do that'

UPS may have lost the check(s), but they appear more than willing to correct the problem and as well willing to pay for the cancellation fee of the lost checks. Both parties are at fault, UPS for misplacing the checks and the OP for not maintaining a record of the check number which should have been done regardless of how a check may have been lost or misplaced. The retailer/vendor that sold the goods is waiting for his money at this point and if the OP doesn't resolve it, that retailer likely won't be shipping anymore items to the OP and if left long enough could hire a collection agency to recover the funds. The OP has to pony up the money somewhere, as UPS isn't likely to lose and pay up. Of course if UPS did cover the COD charge, then there's a chance no money would be withdrawn from the OP's checking account and he'll have gotten his stuff for free. Check isn't real money, only an authorization to withdraw funds from the account of the person that wrote the check :)
Wonder how much the OP pays out in COD fees yearly that are likely tacked on somewhere?:)
