Can I cut and weld two wrenches to make a longer one?

Here you go. I think the tines (slitters) are on a 2 3/4" center and the tines themselves are long enough that when the wrench is on them I can only grab the last little bit of it and can't get enough torque to fully tighten. That's why the longer wrench thinking. A ratchet will not fit and the only solution seems to be a pair of extra long 12 point box end wrenches. That's all that will fit.

I'm really trying to stall this job until spring so I'll have time to think about it --plus I don't really want to do it. I'll feel better in the spring. :D

I think those crow foot wrenches with a ratchet handle or breaker bar would work well for the initial/final loosening/tightening. Cheap money from HF.

I would have to say, from way over here, that does not look like much of a problem. I think I have sockets that would fit in there, but if not, why not just jamb the end of your existing wrench into a piece of pipe to use as an extension? It does not look tight or cramped from where I sit at all. Granted I am not there and photo's can be deceiving, but it sure looks easy here.

Yep they would work, or just jamb an existing wrench into a pipe for torquing.

Something must be lost in the photo and it looks wider than it is. Also missing is the depth from the end of the tine to the bolt. There is no way to get a socket in there. As well, there is little room to get the wrenches to turn very much in a range of motion. Two 12 point box end wrenches seem to work the best.

Weld a long flat handle to a socket. (cut off the square drive of the socket if needed for clearance)

Or cut the square end off your worst old extension and weld that to the long, flat bar and you can change sizes if ever needed on a different machine.

So, can I get two cheapies, cut in half and weld the two longer pieces together?

I'm curious. If you cut them in half, what two pieces will be longer than the other two pieces?

Just weld the two longer halves together. :)

Maybe these extra-long wrenches from HF would reach?

I have these. I find them useful for tightening hydraulic fittings that are buried in a rats-nest of hoses where I can't get my hands in.

What I would like is a 13" long--maybe 12"--5/8 box end/box end wrench. The one in the HF ad is 11".

I've got a 10" one and would try a 12' one but cannot find a maker. Or so I thought. After your post and more time on EBAY, I found a used MAC S24 5/8" box end "flywheel" wrench that fits the bill for me. It's over 16" long! The one shown is pretty beat up but now that I know one is made I know what to look for and will pick one up. I have looked at EBAY a number of times with nothing but tonight it worked. Thank you and I think this is a happy ending.

Guess I have to keep the wrench cutting idea for another day. Sorry no cutting is going on but I'm going to cut and weld two cheapies just for the heck of it so there is something to post.

Here's the EBAY wrench

I still say get a ratcheting box wrench, cut it in half, weld a 6" extension in the center. Working that many small bolts with a standard box wrench, at 1/6 turn at a time, takes forever. Ratchet wrenches are made for jobs just like this.

I'm curious... Why are you replacing the bolts on that slitter? It looks like it's in great shape with little wear.
