Re: BUILDING PERMITS!/TAXES
Permits - It's usually, almost always for the money. Either for the permits, or to raise your taxes.
I built my garage (30 x 50) out back before we built the house. Got the permit and asked about the inspections. The answer - no inspections. This township does not inspect. I built the garage myself, I know it's right. Anyway, the property tax bill went up $50.
When we had the house built, I got the permit and again asked abou the inspection. I was told that I "better trust the builder." No inspections for foundation, plumbing, framing, roof - nothing. The occupancy permit normally issued after the final inspection is not issued either. A garage is one thing, but a house is another. After completion our property tax bill was just over 4k. That was 1998.
We are re-assessed every year. Valuations always go up. Today we are assessed at 270k, and our tax bill is just under 6k. For this we are served by volunteer fire departments from three adjoining townships (we don't have our own), county sheriff, no garbage pick-up, unpaved road, NOTHING! When we get a significant snowfall (not yet this year), we have to call to get the roads plowed.
Our township is about to be annexed piece by piece into an adjoining city. Then the tax bill will really jump. For those extra tax dollars we get full time police and fire departments, garbage and other city services. Oh, and by the way, the city's planning department has sewer and water drawn on their maps. So we can look forward to those special assessments, while kissing off thousands of dollars already spent for permits and construction of well and sanitary systems.
Just send the money.
