Re: Brush Hogging Basics... Another Online Video

Looks like a beefy unit. My mesely 36HP isn't enough even for the 6 footer though, but I wonder how they are priced?

You can use a chain saw on these small ~ 5” and cluster of saplings… but then you still have to dispose the debris…

By backing up, with the cutter in the highest position, use the weight of the cutter to bend/compress the tree and start cutting (slowly...), while also slowly backing the cutter into the tree (keep the tree with tractor pressure in the other direction)
(This 7' cutter without chains is ~~ 1400 lbs.)

Re: Brush Hogging Basics... Tree Removal

John, that PTO shaft looks pretty close to the deck of the cutter when the deck is fully raised. Or is that just the angle of the picture?

BTW, that's how I handle bushes and other small yard debris. Back in, slowly lower, when the banging stops, you're done. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Mike,

I forgot my clearance, but it's about 3 - 5" with the top link in my lowest position... If I move the top link higher, I can of course raise the cutter much higher and the clearance reduces but still is ok...

Re: Brush Hogging Basics... Tree Removal

A farmer friend of mine calls that ' crayfishin' '. I plan to use it to clear out my multifloral rose. He said to be careful b/c he screwed up his PTO hydraulics. I think it was due to an incorrect PTO shaft length though.

Re: Brush Hogging Basics... Tree Removal

Hey John, How big of trees can you back into like that? I have a wall of about 1-2" trees that when[not if, when. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif one of these days] I get a tractor, I plan to cut them down that way. I am already planning to get a cutter on the small size for whatever tractor I get. [heavy brush, but small lot] Will that make a difference?

Thanks for the info JohnMiller3, I just got my first tractor and used your techniques today to brushhawg. I got a big rock with the loader, If it hadn't been for you I'd have found that rock with the cutter. My shear pin thanks you as well.

Re: Brush Hogging Basics... Tree Removal

Well, I did a number of "tree" removal tonight...

One secret of success is don't get carried away, while "grinding" these things up with the brush hog... you must let the "slip clutch" assembly "cool down" after each tree.

On my present cutter, I have a 4-plate clutch assy... but tonight I was just about done and figured I would do this last little cluster of trees that have been in the middle of this one field for the past few years...

I cut 3" material all the time... so tonight I tried it again... but there were 9 - 3" trunks in a cluster... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

now I have a 3-plate slip clutch... the 4th one burned up in a puff of smoke... and that cluster of trees is now laughing at me... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

(note the little black pieces of clutch material on the deck)

Could be worse John. It could have been a gear box, or about 50 shere bolts. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great pictures! Now this is what we should see before making that equipment decision.. I wonder what they'd look like after 1000 hours of work?
