Brush hogging about a month ago and going home (Twilight time-all the tractor lights are OFF)...
(I used my flash on the camera and it picked up the reflective material on the tractor...)

Three questions:

1. Are you still using that 39 cent camera or have you gotten an new one? What kind?

2. What kind of cutter is that with two back wheels? I think I need that for my near-Oozama cutting. It would halve the down pressure on each wheel track.

3. Are you a III or a 3, for goodness sake?

Hi Glenn...

My youngest daughter is now the current owner of my "el cheapo" digital camera... after the bug bite me... I bought a Kodak on my way to the ultimate digital (whichever that may be.... I'm sure it will end up being an Olympus... with min. 10x optical zoom and must be fast for sports action shots {my girls' basketball}-like successor to the E-100RS...?)

The rotary cutter is a Brown 7' with dual tailwheels... I believe adds greatly to the deck strength/structure durability for cutting the heavy duty stuff...

Lastly... I think on my birth certificate it says 3rd... but that's a long time ago... when God was a kid.... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Thanks for bringing this thread back to life John.

I've picked up a few tips on how best I want to do our place. It's nowhere near as overgrown as your place but still I have some areas on the property that may be a bit challenging with the JD4710. Will share more in the future when the 4710 arrives and I get to put it to some practical use.

A very nice rotary cutter video… ~~ about 5 minutes in length… Check out the sizing of the tractor to the appropriate cutter size used…

You should always size the width of the rotary cutter to the PTO hp & torque, the tractor can supply…

A rotary cutter is one implement you DON'T necessarily size to the width of your tractor…

Mr. Miller: Great video! It raises a question I guess I never really thought about. When you attach a 3pt cutter to the top link, is the attaching braket supposed to be pointing toward the ground?

I would start out with a ~ 30 degree pivot point…

Each setup should be customized to your routine/terrain… after you setup the toplink… run the 3-point lift through its up/down range slowly… and watch for interference…
(this applies to any 3-point implement... not just rotary cutters)

1) especially the PTO shaft coming into contact with the rotary cutter deck (while lifting and not paying attention… you will bend/destroy the PTO drive shaft in a hurry…)

2) cutter deck/tire clearance (deck cutting into rear tires, both lugs and sidewalls)

3) check chains/stabilizer arms for restrictions/binding (you DON'T want the cutter to swing/sway from side to side, when in the UP position… but you need some slight movement to prevent binding/stopping throughout the lift range)

4) Check for hoses/wiring/obstructions to prevent crushing/shearing…

5) Finally, adjust your range stops on your position control for repeatable settings…

While cutting, periodically check again… while crossing creeks, ditches, going up/down steep inclines for the proper clearances/motion of the implement…

Well, maybe you answered my question, but I don't understand. I'm referring to the position of the connector on the rottary cutter when attaching the top link. With the cutter in cutting position on the ground, what should be the position of the u shaped connector on the cutter? Should it be lose and pointing toward the ground, or do you screw in the top link and take the slack out of it so the u connector is pointing toward the tractor? And... since we are talking about it, how does one determine the best placement of the top link on the tractor itself? In other words, which set of holes should it go in. I think mine has three sets, maybe four.

Where you put the top link on the tractor side has to do with the draft control mostly. farther from the pivit point makes it more sensitive.
When I set up my rotary, I like to put it at the level I want to cut and have the top link just a little slack so the rear tire and tractor links are carrying the load. If you have too much slack whin you pick it up it will droop in back and possibly not give you enough clearance for the driveshaft. Having it with a little slack enables you to have the most ground clearance in back when backing into a bank or hill or lifting over something.
By putting the top link in the bottom hole on the tractor it will give a bit more lift to the back of the emplement. As my draft piviots from the top I use the top hole, I tend to think it is easier on the hyd system.

The "I want to preview my post and/or attach a file" should be checked.

Click browse and find the file you want and hit continue.

If the file is bigger than 100k then you'll need to reduce the file size some how. You can use PhotoShop, Image composer, etc..

I'm assuming you mean my inline pictures I posted in this thread?... (illegal to do now.../forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

This was before some regulations were enacted and a number of my pictures caused the thread to "widen" too much and s...........lllllllllll............ooooooooooooooooo.....wwwwwwww things down a tad... but here's an answer to your question...

inline use: (use [] instead of {})
{image}picture file name{/image}

You can only insert much smaller pictures inline so as not to cause any viewing difficulties similar to this...

Regarding in-post images:

The size limit used to be 150K, now it is 100K. Some of the old pics in the past postings would have been submitted under that restriction.

In-post images also significantly increase download times, which is primarily a concern for our bandwidth limited bretheren on dial-up-modems - and for Muhammad, who has to fit the bill for storage.

The only in-post images that can be displayed are ones you have written permission to use, or (as in JMIII's case), images that have been posted on TBN some time in the past.
