Snow Equipment Owning/Operating Breaking shearbolts

Oh goody!

I know I am a little tight by times, but never crooked. I agree that high torque on the shear bolts will work them, I did not know that rotational forces, out of whack would too. Stands to reason. Is a snowblower impeller ever in balance? Good Post Phil!

2011 , first year I had my new front snow blower, 5 or 6 shear bolts in a nick of time! The dealer could send a competent mechanic. He isolated one by one every potential source of the problem. He found out a crooked shaft. He swamped the problematic piece on another snow blower, since then, not a single shear bolt was deheaded! There must be something a little off in your setup. Something over tight? Offset?

I just got back from dropping everything off at the dealer. Hopefully they have someone to figure it out. Thanks for commenting. I'll mention it to them.

Agreed. I haven't broken any shear bolts on my JD snowblower but have replaced 2 worm drives at $275 each. The $3 item should be protecting the $275 item not the other way around!

The used 3-point blower I picked up last summer has been pressed into use a few times here. No big snows so far, but a couple really heavy ones. I went through two shear bolts so far. One was when I used the blower to locate a landscape timber. The second one was when I was in a hurry doing a parking lot with about 4-5" of snow that was more like slush. I travelled faster than the blower could clear itself and ended up filling the auger solid. I use 1/4-20's with nylock nuts. There's a zippered tool bag under the seat with plenty of nuts & bolts, wrenches, pins, etc. Fortunately the bolts are very easy to replace.
