After much hand wringing about which trailer to get, and what type, I finally bought one!

Bought a 20 foot Big Tex bumper pull equipment trailer, with mega-ramps on the back. I wanted the 14,000 gvr trailer since it has bigger axles and brakes, but didn't want to trigger the need for a CDL. So I bought the 14,000 gvr trailer with the agreement that they de-rated the VIN sticker to 9,990 lbs. Best of both worlds, I hope? Safety due to trailer strength, no CDL needed.

The base weight is about 3,100 lbs. I don't think I will ever haul anything to top it out at 10,000 lbs. So hopefully my transport needs are safely met, while staying legal. I transported my Massey SCUT on its first trip, and it pulled very nicely. My tow vehicle is a GMC 2500HD diesel.

Here are two pix. The first is in my driveway, loaded up and ready for the first trip. The second photo is at the Interstate 80 / Donner Summit rest area in the Sierras, elevation about 7,000'. Mid-way on its first trip.

looking good, I like those ramps laying flat like that.

Like the look of those ramps.

Technical question on the derate. Rated for 9990, but is heavier than one built for 10000. So legally you can actually put less o it than if it was built for 9990?
